Morning

Mk 1 C5 Vtr

i had a major blonde moment last night and put far too much engine oil into the car - when, in hindsight (don't u love that), there was no need for oil at all.

Managed bout a mile down the road before a chugging engine, followed by a plume of blue smoke and, with the key removed, the engine conitinuing to rev for about ten seconds before tailing off and stopping.

Thankfully no engine fire and oil didn't explode all over the interior of the engine bay. She hasn't been switched back on since, and i've no intention of doing so.

So obviously i'll need the oil drained but what else have i let myself in for?

Please point and laugh, cause its about the only thing that'll cheer me up, self flagellation aint' my thing.

Cheers all.

just drain it and put the correct amount in then clean any oil from the exterior of the engine especially exhaust and under side and lets just hope you haven't done any engine damage, too much oil is as bad as not enough

so, had a guy come out yesterday and drained the excess, she was a bit smokey for the first quarter mile on a small run out. Took her further today with no problems, i've been very very lucky and could easily have ruined a perfectly great car. Will be keeping a watching brief over the next month or so but i don't expect any further probs - thank god!

The exhaust catalyst may not have liked the oil being burnt (assuming the blue smoke mentioned earlier was coming out of the exhaust and not just from spills over the engine). You may only find out at the next MOT when the emissions are checked.

yea my thoughts aswell, the catalyst in the exhaust and the oil filter itself. I had no oil anywhere over the engine bay but i was scared to open the bonnet immediatly after it happened!

i'll be watching for anymore smoke and the fuel economy in general after this. MOT is the end of this year so perhaps it'll have evened out by that point. I've brakes to do in the next couple of months so perhaps i'll see what can be done bout the catalyst and oil filter ahead of time.
