KeithC5 Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 I have a 2005 1.6 Hdi VTR with 87000 miles on the clock, I have just been informed that I am getting a puff of black smoke occasionally from the exhaust (maybe when changing gear) and so I travelled behind it to verify, these are mainly small but sometimes a decent size. the particulate filter was changed when I bought the car approx 2000 miles ago, I thought this was there to prevent any black smoke at all. It was not being driven hard at all when this happened. Any suggestions please as it is due for it's 1st MOT next month. Thanks Quote

I normally get mine up to 70 in 3rd gear and keep it there for a couple of mins if you look in your rear view mirror you should see all the built up crap in the exhaust coming away and blowing out as black smoke. Then i normally put a bottle of forte diesel treatment in with a quarter tank of fuel and they pass emissions first time Diesels are work horses and need a good run every now and then to give it a good clear out although with the current price of diesel everybody is driving for economy Quote
davidad Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Surely there shouldn't be any smoke at all from an hdi with an FAP/particulate filter? An FAP equipped engine in need of an "Italian tune up" will show the "particulate filter clogged" error as all the soot particles are trapped in the filter instead of being blown out of the exhaust. An FAP equipped engine will give a zero reading on the MOT emissions test. It sounds like something may not have been done correctly when the service was done. Quote

While a fap/particulate filter will catch most of it there will always be some that gets through Quote

However, the other and main issue here is that coastline is right about taking the engine for a blast. When I got my last BX second hand, there was a service bill that involved an hours hard motorway driving to cure smokiness, and that was from one of the UK's premier Citroen dealers. I would take the advice offered, a good blast, especially if the car can be worked on a long uphill run with full throttle without having to speed. :D Quote
techbod Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 the FAP is just a cleaner filter and it gets clogged ( Ive heard you can clean it yourself driving at 70 mph for a minute or two with no deviation in speed ) it cleans it but does not reset the system Quote
