hibobs Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Had a lot of trouble starting recently but 10 mins of trying usually got it going accompanied buy loads of smoke.Put in some new glow plugs and problem solved until less than a 1000 miles later. Thirst thoughts are, seeing as the starting it and clouds of smoke are the same, is that the glow plugs have gone again but what would burn all of them out in such short time? Any help, ideas grateful for Andy Quote
pragmatix Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Not sure if this is the same thing but I had this on a diesel Golf a few years back, and it was caused by leaking injectors, are the glow plugs burnt away Quote
techbod Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 leaking injectors/air in fuel system are very common to this problem and clouds of smoke would be normal because of unburned fuel ( did you tighten the glow plugs? ) if air got in there it would cause this problem as well Quote
kfk Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 How about the glow plug relay sticking and causing the glow plug to be fed with power all the time? Quote
pragmatix Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 I dont think that a sticking relay would cause the smoke Quote
kfk Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 The smoke is a consequence of starting with failed glow plugs..........why have the glow plugs failed again so quickly (assuming they have failed) could be the relay is stuck and caused the glow plugs to burn out......hence smokes when eventually starts Quote

techbod Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 the black smoke is as KFK says, does it crank ok or does it feel like the engine/battery has lost contact which would reset the ECU and trigger the alarm/immobiliser? if so check the battery earth for good connection and engine earth, many cars are having the same problem with these low temps and its down to earth contacts freezing which makes them expand and lose contact so when you try to start the engine the earth to the engine fails which will allow it to crank but not fire up. coastline taxis Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Fire the engine up and leave it running. Then put a multimeter onto the glow plugs to see if any voltage is present. test it a few time until car is at running temp. If theres voltage there then the relay is goosed Quote
