2.0 Hdi Engine Managment Light

2001 c5 102k miles, had trouble stating when very cold, replaced glow plugs, to days later the managment light pinged on and then cut out, opps, after a minute it started up and got me home when turned off the engine ran on for a few seconds. at present it continues to run on when turned off thus keeping the engine light on. I have replaced the fuel filter (dirty but no swarf on the bottom of the bowl) and cleaned and checked all the wiring/plugs

Had the thing plugged in and got the following p1138 fuel pressure regulator/p1112 fuel rail pressure and p0380 glow plug relay (poor starting when below zero??)

also got 298 bar pressure to the fuel rail at idle which I belive is correct so hopfuly the HP pump is ok.

when going over the car, if I disconected the plug to the fuel rail sensor it ran a bit rough but stopped instantly the key was switched off,

Any ideas before I sell my kidney and take it to my local deisel specalist

engine running on is normally down the the stop solenoid on the pump and possibly a bad glow plug relay making the glow plugs live all the time, the P0380 is the problem here and the others are expected so doubt there is a problem there

thanks for the quick reply, just checked for 12v to the glow plugs with engine running ,none present so the glow plugs are not on all the time . Is the stop solioid on the top of the hp pump, some one told me that was only a pressure reducer??I like your train of thorght as when it over runs you may get fuel pressure errors, what I can not understand is if the injectors are closed or should be(key out)how is it doing it????

had the same problem last november and checked everything as we were fortunate to have a spare car to try bits of. in the end it turned out to be the bio metal strip in the bottom of the fuel filter housing so id change that if i were you.

do a search on here for p1138 and read all about it

cheers gents, the latest update is I drove it for 100miles and it suddenly turned off ok, then it switched back from limp mode to normal and the dreaded light went of and has stayed off now for 63 miles????? it fixed its self, so all i did was replace the fuel filter and clean and inspect alot of elec plugs, none of whitch were dirty, beats me. the weather has warmed up here if that could make a difference. two qestions were is the glow plug relay and how does this bimetal strip cause the run on fault , thanks for your help gents

hmmm sounds like you did a FAP filter regeneration that's that expensive filter in front of the catalyst which requires regeneration every 50k at ridiculous prices ;)

From memory, the 2.0 HDi does not have FAP before 2004/5. Only 2.2 HDi are FAP equipped from 2001 on.

Early 2.2 require the FAP to be replaced at 50k after about mid 2002 it becomes 75k.

Prices vary but a good indy may be able to help. ;-)
