Guest Visa10E Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 My 02 2.2 HDi Exclusive is just coming up to 80,000 miles, Ive read some horror stories about the cambelt snapping before the 100k change interval should I get mine done or give it til say 90,000, plus how much would the job cost from an Indy? I'm driving to the south of France in June by which time the car will have only done 82-83,000 miles, Ive had a poke round the forum but some advice would be appreciated Quote

I know of 3 2.2s which broke belts and ended up at my local indy over a 6 week period, all were between 90 and 100k. I had mine done at 84k. Belt and new tensioners and rollers is about 500 notes, fitted. Damage can be between 1.5 and 2k. It was a no brainer for me as I was not intending to sell the car in the short term and therefore the money was going to be spent, all that altered was when. Quote
old'uns Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 as soon as questioning whether to change or not comes up there's only 1 answer..... Quote
Guest Visa10E Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Ok nice one guys, Ive also read that the water pump needs changing at the same time too, is this true, as the bill is already approaching half the car's value as it is, it was only a £160 job on my Civic! Quote

You don't have to, but you would be mad not too. The timing belt drives the water pump, if you don't change it, and then it goes, you have to pay all the labour to remove and refit the timing belt to get at the water pump. A genuine Citroen pump is around £40. If a jobs worth doing... Quote
myglaren Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Also well worth renewing the timing belt tensioner while you are on with it. Quote
techbod Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 it is better to change the lot to save cash/time in the long run because every time you have to go into that area its COST £££££ of course you could check if the bearings on the pump are worn by waggling it from side to side but the main thing is ( has it ever been changed ) and only service history will tell you that, wouldn't it be an absolute pig if you replaced the belt and a tensioner/water pump went then you have to do it all over again  Quote
coastline taxis Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 How can it come to 500ish at the indy (and they call dealers expensive). Parts= timming belt, tensioner, guide and water pump should be around 140 ish and it takes 2 to 3 hours to do. so they must be charging over a 100 quid an hour labour. Hopefully that not plus vat Quote

Hopefully that not plus vat No, not plus VAT. I think they replaced the roller on the other side, and I've not got the bill to hand as it was a while ago. There may have been some other small issue as I tend to save those up for visits. If I find the bill I'll post details..... Quote
Guest Visa10E Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Thanks for all the replies guys, getting it done on saturday by a mate of a mate who works on motors part time, £320 all in including water pump & related tensioners etc, genuine Citroen parts too so am reasonably happy. Next job is to stop the climate blowing hot air out of the passenger side then I'll be almost be able to live with the damn car! Quote
pragmatix Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I got mine done at 94K with the 100k service and it was still only £395 that was a main dealer, special rate for older cars Quote
