My 02 reg C5 2.0HDi has failed the MOT on exhaust emissions.

I have been told by the main dealer my car does not have a particle filter so that is not to fault.

I have changed oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter with no effect.

There are no warning signs on the dash.

Does anybody have any other idea? Catalytic converter maybe?

Does anybody know how I would go about adjusting the emissions?

Thanks for reading/replying.

Put Millers Diiesel Power Sport 4 or Diesel Redex in the fuel tank then take the car for a fast drive using plenty of revs. All four of our cars need MOTs and they all get the treatment before going for the test.

Thanks for your advise, but do you know what your emission figures are before doing said treatment? It could be all four of your cars are well within the emission limits even before doing what you suggest.

Does the car spend most of its life doing shopping run or running round the town..take the car onto a motorway and give it a good boot get it up to 70 in 3rd and watch the crap come out the back, That should half your emmisions also make sure the engine is hot and had a good run prior to the retest. And as JD says put a additive in the tank to help it

Shell V Power Diesel is the mutts nutts at this sort of thing. I run mine only on this now. When the head gasket went, the pistons were almost spotless and the motor had done 117k at the time, the last 10k on V power. Get the tank real low and brim it, that will clean it up in no time.

If you are getting a bit of smoke, you can also try disconnecting the EGR at the vacuum pipe before the MOT.

I always give them a liberal dose of Millers during the week before taking them for test. Last year I didn't get around to doing the Xsara before testing and it failed on smoke. I brought it away and dosed it well with Millers. Early the following morning I took it for a thrashing down the A3 and then straight back for a retest as they opened at 8am. It got a 'fast pass' with 1.24. The Saxo went in last Thursday for test and it passed with 1.12. Give it a try - it works wonders.

I use my car Sunday and Wednesday. Each day it does 126 miles from Kent to Cheltenham (M20, M26, M25, M4, A419).

It doesn't smoke at all.

I have booked it in at my local citroen dealer for an hour check on their computer diagnostic machine. May show up something?

Thanks to all for your advise.

I was wondering if any particular fuel company diesel was better than another. I was thinking of trying one of the "low sulphar" brands.

There isn't smoke from the exhaust.

Thanks for your advise

Up Wrotham Hill 3 or 4 times in third gear as Coastline says. Maybe do the run up Wrotham, then turn around at the M25 intersection or just run up the A20 a few times then turn round at the top.

A steep hill will allow you to welly it properly without exceeding the speed limit.

These guys know what they are talking about.

If all else fails, take it to Pete Simpson at Mid Kent Vehicle Services. 01622 794499.
