Guest Bodger Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 I am told by my local Citroen dealer this will cost about £400 for additive and new filter, is this correct.....????... ;) Quote
myglaren Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 Seems to be about right but you could save a bit by shopping around.£320 is the lowest quote I have heard, can't recall where though. Quote

Johndouglas Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 FAP - Filtre a particules........... or in English - the Particle filter. You'll find it in the exhaust pipe situated below the gear change. The idea is that it traps all the soot and every 300 or so miles the temperature is raised from its normal 150C up to 300 degrees and the soot is burnt. The temperature raising is brought about by the Eolys fluid. Eventually although the soot is burnt away, the Eolys fluid leaves behind an ash residue. That's when the warning message appears saying the particle filter is blocked. Ignore the message and the system goes into 'limp-home'. Quote
Guest Bodger Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 ;) Thanx for your explanation, it is all becoming clearer now and I can see why it costs so much to put it right. There was me thinking I had a bargain....... ;) Quote
myglaren Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Substituting diesel for the Eolys fluid will work for a while but then the filter will clog up quicker as the eolys is needed to reduce the temperature needed to burn off the soot from the filter. A good long fast run on a quiet motorway will aid the regeneration process. There are some threads on the forum dealing with just that subject. Quote
techbod Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 regenerating ;) sounds like a good cheap way to go,also did you know BMW diesels have a FAP filter and don't have an Eloy's tank so I wonder if they got it right and does the Eloy fluid really work or an expense you can do without?, Eloy's lasts for approx 50k miles its injected at speeds of 50 mph only so not any good round town ( it isn't used as a coolant for the filter or to burn off residue the regeneration does that by heating up the exhaust fumes ) it simply make the filter wet with a gungy fluid to catch the larger particles, I have read up about this Eloy's stuff and its more of an issue than you might think because it creates more dangerous elements into the atmosphere and its documented so it might be keeping the air clear until it has to regenerate and at that one time its not clean especially where it decides to dump its crap, there are quite a few people who drive with the low Eloy's light on and don't care about it try aussiefrogs and other Citroen/pug sits and see what the say don't just take my word for it. Johndouglas Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Eloy's lasts for approx 50k miles its injected at speeds of 50 mph only so not any good round town Eloy's lasts for approx 50k miles .............. Not true! I believe it was Henshaw on this forum who topped up his Eolys fluid at 90000 even although it wasn't showing a message. its injected at speeds of 50 mph only so not any good round town ................. My understanding is that a measured amount of eolys is injected every time the computer recognizes a fillup. Quote
techbod Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 not sure about the full tank bit ( what if you never fill it? ), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_particulate_filter interesting read. Quote
Johndouglas Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 not sure about the full tank bit ( what if you never fill it? ), The amount of eolys fluid injected into the fuel tank is proportional to the amount of diesel that's put in. So fill the tank completely and the computer injects about 7 teaspoonfuls. Only put in 20 litres and it gets a couple of teaspoons. Quote

When it starts you MUST keep on driving at the same speed for a set time (around ten minutes IIRC) until it is complete. Apparently the car sounds like a tractor while this is happening and kicks out an astonishing amount of black smoke for the duration. EOLYS is intended to minimise this by reducing the temperature at which the soot will burn away. You CAN DIY the replacement of the FAP and refill the EOLYS tank BUT some need to be reset by a dealer once the warning has been displayed and some can't be reset at all. Don't recall precisely what the fix is there but have an idea it may be a replacement computer for the regeneration function. There are two different and very specific EOLYS fluids and it is essential to get the correct one.The stuff used by HGVs is not suitable at all. Uses Urea instead of Cerium salts. Quote
Guest Bodger Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Bloody hell, I am confused again now......... ;) ;) Quote
techbod Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 no need to get confused mate do a google typing the name "FAP FILTER" and "WIKI ELOYS" then it explains what they are and of course DIY is the way to go. johndouglas you say a few spoons full so its the spoons blocking the system ;) j/k ;) Quote
coastline taxis Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Actually if memory serves theres a switch in the filler flap (not to be confused with filler cap) and every time it is opened and shut it registers in the ecu and after so many it puts the light on. So techbod would i be right in asuming that plastic spoons would be better as theyd burn of during the next regeneration Quote
