Guest digitalinkjetman Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Is it possible to re-program the gearbox? Having the 2.2 it has loads of grunt, but the box is too quick to drop a gear when it should just use the torque available. Perhaps there is a way of fooling it to stay in 3rd/ 4th and pull? Obviously the kick down might be a way of stopping it, but Ive found it still does it even in manual gear hold. Quote
coastline taxis Posted October 3, 2009 Posted October 3, 2009 Check to see what software version you have on the auto box ecu maybe a software update could make it better. Has is got the sports button on it Quote
Guest digitalinkjetman Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Check to see what software version you have on the auto box ecu maybe a software update could make it better. Has is got the sports button on it Yes it has the sports / snow selections. It had a software update the other week when it went in for the elois oil fill up, but I have not noticed any change. It was doing it on Sunday as I drove down the Fosse Way! changing down then up when it could have quite happily stayed in top gear! Quote
Randombloke Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Yes it has the sports / snow selections. Snow selection should force higher gears than normal. Worth trying to see if you get the results you want. Quote
techbod Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 snow selection only puts it into higher gear when your stuck in the snow so you don't spin the wheels and will only work at very low speed, the gearbox wont do anything for you because its automatic and programmed ( use the tiptronic that lets you use lower gears and stay in them longer ) failing that you need to have the engine and tranny programed by a specialist. coastline taxis Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Was the update done on the engine ecu or the gearbox ecu as the box has its own ecu Quote
techbod Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 very true mate but as it was only and update I doubt it would improve performance that much and what he wants is performance and that's a specialist area and expensive so citroen wont touch it because its against there rules ( safety and warranty ) :D Quote
iannez Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 how long have you owned the car. if you have not owned it long or its a shared car the ecu will be having problems adjusting to your driving style and may need to be reset or an update as coastline said. cant see anything in his post about improving performance techbod. he wants it to rev lower not higher. Quote
techbod Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 he wants it to stay in lower gears for longer so reading between the line that means more umpf/performace and the use of tiptronic is the way there, I see where your going on the ECU requiring relearn if more than one driver. Quote
coastline taxis Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 If it was mine id been taking it to Tcc and geting a software update also get the oil in the box replaced at the same (As its not a straight forward job). As for holding it in gear for more grunt if its a 90 bhp living with a 4 speed auto box then its never going to be a rocket also theses boxes arnt the strongest of boxes and cost a fortune to repair/replace Quote

Just to get back on track - the OP is asking how to stop the box dropping a gear so as to use torque rather than revving. The car is a 2.2 so even the oldest version is 136 bhp. Older versions of this engine will pull from just above idle in all except the top 2 gears if you have the manual. However, this end of the rev range is where the torque converter will slip or allow the box to drop down. Allowing the box to learn driving style seems like the simplest and cheapest route. Worth trying before spending money. Quote
coastline taxis Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Having read the original post again it seems that the box dodnt know which gear it wants to be in when just cruising so to speak. Check to see when the g/box oil is due/or been changed because if its lost all its viscosity then the box wont work properly. Software if its the original software then it wont allow for wear and tear so if the mileage is high then the a newer software version is needed Quote
Guest digitalinkjetman Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 :D HI guys, thanks for the responses. The car is an 01, it has far more torque and power than standard, its been tweaked a little. This is the reason for the re program, even if I hold it in manual it still drops a gear and revs its nuts off with no power! In summary then it can be done but by specialist citroen / programmers! I will investigate and report back, or just live with it. Quote
techbod Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 even if I hold it in manual it still drops a gear and revs its nuts off with no power! your tranny has a problem because it shouldn't do that so check the linkage ans see if its stretched/loose ( same thing on cruise control ) if things fall out of parameters they cant read the speed of the engine/tranny and do odd things ( also blocked filters and spent fluid due to age/raging of speed burns the viscosity out of the fluid making it weak) if its drive by wire then its software related and hasn't been programmed right. same as oil if the engine is treated like a racing car the oil breaks down its protection due to heat and has to be changed more often, also consider a blocked tranny air vent.
