johntom Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Hijust got around to looking at the handbrake on my 2004 c5 (it pulls up nearly vertical but still works) and found the n/s cable is completely snapped (near the thick part in front of the bracket). Having looked at a few on ebay, they appear to come as an inner cable and just the front piece of outer cable which joins at the thick bit? Is replacing just a question of removing the original, then sliding the inner through the rigid outer case bracketed to the car? Quote
paul.h Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Haynes gives handbrake cable replacement as simply disconnecting at both ends and pulling out of the guides with replacement in reverse order (no more detail is given). Removal of part of the centre console may be needed. Then adjust so the lever is full on at 5 clicks. Quote
coastline taxis Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 Do yourself a favour and buy the inner and outer cable as youl never be able yo do it the haynes way as its a proper pain. Done loads of these and it easier this way . Youl need to remove or push to one side the heat shields next to the exhaust then a 10mm bolt were it fastens to the chassis leg and just pull the whole lot out.Youl also need to lift the center console unless you have acsess to a small child with 9 fingers on a 8ft arm. Just remember the cables are sided Quote
johntom Posted November 15, 2010 Author Posted November 15, 2010 Hithe replacements i have seen look like a full length inner cable with the front bit of outer cable already fitted (one end appears to push into the rigid outer cable/guide tube thats fixed to the chassis). Are these any good or do you need to but the whole thing/guide tube ?http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/pict/1304550019986464_1.jpg Quote
coastline taxis Posted November 15, 2010 Posted November 15, 2010 We get the cable and the tube it really is easier. Try the inner cable first and if you cant do it then get the outer tube as they can be bought seperate Quote
johntom Posted December 1, 2010 Author Posted December 1, 2010 I ended up buying the guide tube as well. The inner cable was well and truly seized into the guide tube with no way to remove it. All seams well again with the handbrake. Quote
