Hi all

first post so hello everyone. Right I need a towbar fitted to a C5 HDI hatch (2003 model) and it's fitted with a reversing sensor (which is factory fitted I believe).I'm getting a bit confused with some of the advice I'm getting. The first dealer recommended a detachable towbar because of the sensor at a price of £518, a second dealer said (without me mentioning what the first dealer said) "your'e often told to get a detachable but thats not always necessary" his price for non-detachable was £310, so as you see quite a bit of difference in price.

Any advice gratfully recieved.

Rather than a detachable, if you do not do much towing, go for a bolt on towball type, then if there is a problem with the sensors you can remove it and even later retrofit a detachable towball. I bought my towbar through towbars direct in Warrington but fit it myself which was not too difficult. I do not have reversing sensors though so can not comment on that.

I'm sure on most cars you can diconnect the rev sensor when towing, dont know about the C5 tho.(somebody will)

Here is a link to "towsure towbars".I've used their towbars on many cars over the years and never had a problem. I usually fit them myself or take them along to the local towbar centre..Much cheaper this way. http://www.towsure.com/category/6542

click on "more info" on the towbar for your car to make sure its the one for your car.

I fitted a Witter bar to my C5 estate with a fixed towball. It does interfere with the sensors but there's a switch on the dashboard which switches them off.

I also fitted a fixed type towbar to my mk1 04 exclusive hatch i did have a problem with the reverse sensors only the two each side of the towball, So i cut two bits of black plastic about the size of 10p pieces and used double sided tape to cover them. They still work as normal just using the outside two.

Hi Johndouglas I wonder if you could give me some advice. I am about to fit a tow bar to a 2007 C5 Estate, the instructions say 'Remove the under tray (4 screws under the rear valance, 1 screw forward of the exhaust hanger). I can see the screws but I notice that there are a few tabs which locate the under tray to the rear bumper - do I remove the screws and just pull the under tray off is is there a procedure to disconect the tabs?

No just undo the screws and pull the tray downwards. There are four along the back and one near the rear wheel. The side piece is attached.
