Gearbox Oil Level

Hi guys, gearbox oil level question..

I have a C5 2001 2.2 hdi sx..5 speed manual gearbox..109K miles on the clock.

Very happy with the car,I've sorted out the usual leccy probs on the car and it runs very well.

Except I can hear a continuous whine from what I think may be coming from the gearbox.I only hear it when the car is moving.I do not think it is a wheel bearing noise.?

How can I check the oil level in the gearbox,

If I decide to empty and refill the gearbox with new oil, how do I get the old oil out.

and lastly where is the refill/top up inlet.

I am asuming this is a job I could do myself...?????...or not.

Drain plug on the bottom of the box. Your better off just chainging instead of checking. To refil we just remove the reversing light switch and put it in there as its easy to get at. Roughly 2 litres needed

When I have had whining noises from the car when moving, they have been wheel bearing wear and also gearbox bearing wear. The noise level can vary when accelerating/in different gears if gearbox and when turning if wheel.

 

If a gearbox, it may not get worse but on one I left it too long to replace the bearings (on output shaft) to the extent that the shaft could move about 1/4 inch and was jumping out of gear, plus it also damaged a gear. You can get bearings from a bearing shop but the costs can add up so often a second hand box is cheaper/less time also and if using the secondhand route there is no real benefit in starting any repairs until your box has died. Plus you will also want to replace the clutch so more costs.

and please be careful quoting spam as its hard enough to filter out. you could be mistaken for a spammer and banned.

would if i could coastline mate but dont have the rights or know how. just have to try and keep this up until admin sort something. removed more spam than there is proper posts tonight. we are getting hit hard for some reason.

could you not delay posting till theyve been aproved by a mod or possibly make every questtion to have a fully completed aplication form eg name town and car reg but posibly keep reg anonomous. I know its Easy for us to say but its a good site compered to others and a shame to spoil it oor if everyone just ignores it then it might just go away
