seefive Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Front tyres are near the markers already on my 2013 C5 - 10,000 miles! OE Michelins 245/40/19 Budget replacements can be had for around £100 each , so not a disaster. Michelins are crazy price, and seem to be made of sh*t Didn't Michelin own Citroen at one time? Quote
Randombloke Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Citroen has been owned by Peugeot since the mid 1970s, after the major sales problems they had with the SM (less than 15,000 sold) and the CX at the beginning of the fuel crisis. Citroen owned Maserati in the late 1960s and that was where the idea for the SM came from, with the 6 cylinder 2.7 V6. Soon PSA will be mostly owned by Doafeng (sp?) and the intellectual property will head to China along with the manufacturing. My caution would be that the C5 III can be bad for road noise and is tyre selection sensitive for the same.... Quote
Johndouglas Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Didn't Michelin own Citroen at one time? You're quite right! In the early 1930's Andre Citroen found himself bankrupt because of developing the Traction Avant. Pierre Michelin had money invested with Citroen, so he became the major shareholder in the ailing Company. Eventually he took over as Chairman of Citroen. The Traction Avant continued in production and became a 'life-saver ' for the company. Quote
paul.h Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Wear on Michelins seems to vary, possibly as a function of driving style/journey type (short or long, motorway or lanes), or maybe how soft the rubber is on the original tyres. However, we have always had a high mileage before needing to replace them, about twice that of previous makes we used on other cars such as Dunlop and Pirelli. Worst wear I had was on some India tyres on a Maxi, only 5k miles and down to the cloth. So in our case, the higher cost pays back. Our first C5 about 30k miles wore them down, our current mark 2 C5 replaced about 13k miles when I got the car due to side wall cracking rather than wear. Our Picasso sold about 38k miles and 1 tyre replaced due to a puncture. Our first C4 the fronts lasted about 30k miles, our current C4 is on 35k miles and still has 3½mm tread on the fronts. Our first C3 the tyres were replaced at about 35k miles due to cracking. Our latest C3 has Bridgestones and at 14k miles they are on 3mm tread so from approx 7mm new will need replacing in a couple of thousand miles. Quote
Johndouglas Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 My 2005 C5 Estate of course came with Michelins but of all the tyres I've used on it, the originals had the shortest life - about 16000 miles on the front pair - the rears quite a bit longer. Since then I've had Avon, Barum, Nexon and Eurotyre (a Spanish budget range). All have been satisfactory and all have given longer service than the Michelin - around 25000miles but the longest were the Spanish Eurotyre pair. Quote
Mike O. Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 I used to like Continental ContiEcoContact CPs (CP for Comfort Plus), but they are no longer available in Australia. The Comfort Contact 1 tyres were comfortable and quiet, but not so good in the wet (Made in Malaysia). My current favourites are Toyo Teo Plus (Made in Japan): very quiet, great ride comfort, good enough in the wet, reasonable price.Wouldn't buy Michelins: expensive and noisy on coarse chip bitumen when they wear out a bit.I don't think Avons are available here, otherwise I would give them a try.My current Michelin Primacy HP tyres are very good performance and ride wise, but already noisy on coarse chip roads despite having done only 8000 km. Regards, Mike O. Quote
Johndouglas Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 My latest buy is a 160bhp C5 X7 estate which has just over 30000 miles on the clock. Presumably it's on its second set of Michelin Primacy tyres and they are down to 3mm of tread, which confirms my previous findings of them - about 16000 miles on the front wheels. Quote
paul.h Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 Maybe maybe not - our 2011 C4 is still on its original tyres, Michelin energy and the fronts are on 3 mm tread and it has now done 37800 miles. If you do not have a record of the tyre change then possibly the Citroen dealer may have it recorded on their system if they replaced them. Quote
Johndouglas Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Sorry Paul - should have said - the car is a 2010 whilst the front tyres have a manufacture date of 0912. Quote
Parkesie Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 My mk3 tourer has done 20k on a set of continental sport contact 3 and has about 2mm left so not far of change time. They are quieter and more comfortable than the bridgestone potenza ones that it had when i brought the car. Quote
