ashcoe Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Hi all need your help! Over the last 3 weeks my 2:0 HDI has been gradually doing less mpg. Yesterday I got 36 miles from £10! Usually this gets me 70+. checked air filter and tried finding any air leaks from pipes etc. but not found anything. Can't find any fuel leaks either. Been trawling the forum and other places. Could it be my MAF sensor? Could it cause this drastic loss of mpg and how can I check it? Thanx for your anticipated help :) Quote
Johndouglas Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Apart from the ghastly fuel consumption, how is the engine running, what's the performance like, what sort of roads did you do the 36 miles on? Tell us a bit more please. Quote

Tell us a bit more please. Hi John thanx for your reply. The engine has done 140K. Had the head skimmed and new valves at 110K. It seems fine performance wise. pulls ok and generally feels smooth. Went to work down the motorway and came back through town and on an A road. Put another £10 in this morning and came to work. needle doesn't seem to have moved as drastic as it did yesterday but I will know more when I get home tonight. I did notice the orange fuel light came on when I was going up a hill? I would imagine the gauge is on a float? I have noticed a gradual loss of mpg over the last 3 weeks or so Quote
paul.h Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 To do a proper mpg check you could do with filling the fuel tank (but approx £90), noting the mileage, do a few hundred miles and then do a refill again. Checking only over about 7 litres will not be accurate enough. Even resetting the onboard mpg display (hold in the button on the end of the wiper stalk) over a short distance may not be too accurate but would be better than using the fuel gauge. As a quick check you could see if the wheels spin freely so the brakes are not seized. Quote
coastline taxis Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 is there any smoke comming out the back and is it a 90 or a 110 Quote
ashcoe Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 is there any smoke comming out the back and is it a 90 or a 110 Its a 110. No smoke at all. Going Lanzarote in an hour so will do the checks you have advised and get back to you next week. Thanx for your valuable input Quote
ashcoe Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 Hi all. Been back since Friday. Checked each wheel and one of the rears wouldn't spin by hand. It was the dreaded build up between the caliper and the arm. I had already done the other side some months ago after i heard the wheel grinding against the caliper. For some reason there was no noticeable noise coming from this one. Just split it enough to get a blade between the two as the last one was a 'pig' after i got it off. All seams good now. Thanx to all for your help. Well done! Quote
paul.h Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I hope that has solved your mpg problem. I have been cleaning up/greasing the rear caliper joints every couple of years on our C5 since the corrosion sems to come back fairly quickly. There are pinned posts on the brakes on this subforum if you have not seen them. Quote
