joesonx Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) Hello, I have a 2002 Citroen Xsara Estate 2.0 Diesel, Black not that matters. The speedometer is currently intermittent it will stop for ages then start, but I could cope (although it is illegal for having no speedometer) it is highly unlikely you'll be pulled over unless your speeding. But anyway's the problem is it will stop for a while then all the sudden work, but then it will go random such as 140mph when i'm doing about 20 and then sometimes to 10mph's and the car then loses power for a second whilst the speedometer is flickering. Any ideas is this a simple fix as I can't afford a big expenditure. Also another problem.. I can not find a picture of the fuse boxes and which fuse is which anywhere, I have found a few similar ones but none of them are exact and I do not have original manual. The radio has stopped working completely and it seems all the fuses are Ok including the ones in the radio itself (it isn't original radio!) Edited April 7, 2014 by joesonx Quote
Johndouglas Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Is your battery in good condition? Have you jump started it recently? When the battery is well charged you could try disconnecting the negative cable for a short while. Make sure you have the radio code written down. Quote

I don't have standard radio so codes isn't a problem, I haven't taken cables of a battery before but if I take it off it isn't going spark a bit is it or will it do nothing whilst its not being used? Johndouglas Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 With Citroen C5's there's a procedure for disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. Whether the same would apply to Xsara's I don't know. Certainly if you carried out the same procedure it wouldn't do any harm. This is it:- Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off. Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition. Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait 15 seconds. Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do not open doors.). Switch on the side lights through the driver's window. Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality. Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds. Remove key open & close door test central locking system. Start the engine and complete the system's check. Reset the clock and date. Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items. Quote
paul.h Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 If the speedometer is not a digital one its needle may be loose on its shaft. I had this on a C5 and was able to remove the needle and put it back with a drop of glue on the shaft. See 19 on the C5 Technical section Common problems post for more details. http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/20279-common-problems-rev-342014/ You have not mentioned any problems with the abs since the speedo often uses an abs sensor to detect the speed. There could be a common fault for the speedo and radio such as wiring damage behind the radio or a loose earth point, so it may pay to pull the radio out and have a look. Quote
joesonx Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 (edited) Don't think the car has ABS! There is no light that flashes on it when I start it up anyways. Couldn't try battery thing as it was raining yesterday will try it tonight/tomorrow. Edited April 8, 2014 by joesonx Quote
