hi all

i have a citroen c5 automatic exclusive 2.2 hdi. It is on a 06 plate with 100000 miles. The car is lovely cant fault it except one thing

whenever i start if for the first time the car idles rough i was told that if i revved it up to 2500 rpm on startup that should correct it. when i rev it up i get some smoke from the exhaust. i drive off and it drives perfect no probems no dashboard lights.the car will then start with no problems at all  has anyone got any suggestions

Welcome to the forum.

My first move would be to carry out a Diagnostic session using either Citroen's own Diagbox or a OBD2 Reader. This would highlight any faults the car may have picked (up with regards to air flow meter, throttle body, egr, ...).

Also, this will highlight any faults with the coolant temp sensor. If this part is defective, it may be telling the computer that the engine is already warm, thus under fueling the vehicle when cold causing a rough idle.

It could also point towards a fault with the dozer valve, AKA idle air control valve.

What kind of smoke are we getting? Big black smoke?

The smoke makes you think the dpf is not that effective unless it is burning oil. Has the dpf been removed or drilled through ?

Now the weather is a bit cold, do you see the glow plug light for a few seconds - it will help starting if you wait a few seconds until it goes out in the colder weather.

The engine will be the 136 bhp 2.2 hdi, I think the 173 bhp 2.2 hdi was not used until 2007.
