mickrochip Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 hello there, can any one tell me where the heaterplugs are, also the heater plug relay, my sept, 54plate c5 (facelift, 6 speed model) is getting very hard to start on cold mornings, thanks for now A llen Quote
Johndouglas Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 The glow plugs are on the back of the engine and the relay is in the plastic electric box on the left hand side of the engine compartment. Glow plugs aren't normally required unless the temperature is very low. Quote
paul.h Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 John just beat me to a reply but since I had already typed most of it, here it is. This is from the Haynes manual for the 2.0 hdi DOHC engine (138 bhp): The glow plug relay is in the electrical box at the gearbox side of the engine compartment. Remove the fasteners and the box lid. Undo 2 torx bolts and move the ECM to one side without removing its plugs. Undo a torx bolt holding the relay unit to the box, lift it out and undo the electrical plug. In the photo it looks quite big, probably about 1 inch square. The glow plugs are at the back of the engine and the egr valve and cooler have to be first released and moved to one side but without having to disconnect the cooler hoses or drain the coolant. The air filter housing may also need removing. The plug threads should be smeared with copper grease and tightened to 22 Nm. Quote
mickrochip Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 thanks for the info lads, will . get alook at it in the morning. i also have two codes that maybe you could help me with , codes p1598 p1351.also when i clear these faults theother fault , which i have described earlier, namely ESP/ASR system faulty, directional headlamp system faulty also disappear only to come back at alater stage, may be in about 10/20 miles.this car was off the road from june to dec. maybe this is what is making my car hard to start. the car was starting ,driving well before the enforced lay up, Quote
madmadmax Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 non of my hdi's are useing the glow plugs or start up just post start. the glow plugs are only used below 5c and then its like 2sec, i used to have a littel chart with them and glow plug on time. had an old 8 valve hdi lighting off in -17c and the only problem it had was a bit of white smoke. p1598 its in french but its got pics so it may help http://www.forum307.com/viewtopic.php?p=862647&sid=41bf95747f0ac249e4b3652ca71fd015 it seams to be an electrovalve on the thermostat housing Quote
coastline taxis Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 be warned the heater plugs are a pig to replace. youve either got to pull the engine as far forward as u can or think about removing the exhaust manifold.and turbo Quote
MikeLane Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 This is very interesting. When I took my C5 for its first service (2005) an "expert" told me that the glowplugs came on and off "all the time" to aid combustion and reduce emissions, all controlled by the ECU. Quote
madmadmax Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 mike thay have two settings pre and post start, the pre start only comes one at low temps but the post comes on to aid combustion untill the engine is up to temp or reved above 2000rpm. Quote
