mickrochip Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 hello there , can anyone please tell me what to look out for on this esp / asr system as it has now thrown up a fault , engine starts , runs a few seconds , then this esp alarm sounds and the light comes on, a few second later the directional headlamps alarm comes on to say this system faulty, i have tried to clear faults using a hand held code reader, but faults still exist,I had a B.S.I UNIT fitted about 2 years ago , have not had a problem until now, thanks for now. i will await your replies in anticipation Quote
mickrochip Posted September 26, 2015 Author Posted September 26, 2015 just to update you, i carried out a bsi reset according to instructions ,but esp. fault still exists Quote
coastline taxis Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 could be a fault with your headlight. without doing a diagnostic oin the car then people are just guessing. so its a diagnostic you need sorry Quote
mickrochip Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 hello there, just got my car diagnosed at Donnelley group, enniskillen esp /asr system faulty, directional lights faulty, they say it is all connected to an abs ecu internal fault,it is not worth it to replace it with a new one at £1300.00 wouldit be possible to get a second hand unit, and if so would it need to be put on the computer to initilise the unit Quote
paul.h Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 2004,54 plate, 2.0 hdi from previous posts. From Citroen's procedure, the abs ecu can be replaced without having to undo the brake pipes on the valve block, just move it away from the bracket and it does not mention having to initialise it with a diagnostic. To get to it though it says the engine fusebox needs removing. However, the parts diagrams lists 2 - 4542F0 and 4542F1 with the first listed as part to be configured and the second as a configured part to the VIN so I suspect it will need to be put on a computer. On a previous C4 we had the abs pump replaced and that had to be connected up for a diagnostic. Quote
mickrochip Posted October 6, 2015 Author Posted October 6, 2015 thanks for the info, but here is a wobbler for you, the diagnosctic check states that it is an internal fault in the ecu, this afternoon after using my trailer, the faults have all disappeared, how or why, I don't know what happened , there seemed to be a pop from the exhaust, and after that it cleared the faults. i will keep you informed as to what happens in future Quote
mickrochip Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 JUST to update you, esp/asr lights came on again this morning, i just have one question now, are all c5 asb ecu's the same or will i have to get one from a 54 2.0 hdi VTR Quote
paul.h Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 There are just the 2 part numbers noted above for the mark 2 C5 2004 to 2008 but the mark 1 C5 2001 to 2004 is completely different. The mark 3 C5 is also different. On ebay they seem to come complete with the abs pump but the prices vary widely. Quote
mickrochip Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 Thanks Paul.h, can you please let me know the part no.s for this unit for a 2.0 hdi, vtr on a 54 plate, ican get a unit from a local breaker, also will the car need to be put on the computer to accept new unit . by the way do you know any body that would recondition this old unit p.s if you need the reg.no please let me know Quote
paul.h Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 From above post 5, for the abs ecu for the mark 2 C5:the parts diagrams lists 2 - 4542F0 and 4542F1 with the first listed as part to be configured and the second as a configured part to the VIN. So provided the part comes from a mark 2 C5 it should be the same as on your car. We need somebody with a Lexia to tell us if a used part still needs to be configured. Quote
mickrochip Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 hello there, this is a follow up to my query , last evening when i was driving home from the local town every light /warning came on on the dash , the service light came on ,also the stop warning light, i stopped car and turned off engine, after afew minutes i tried to start car again, ignition would turn on bu not start, display on dash wouldn't light up, temp gauge wouldn't work plus a few other , tried to push start , no go, as a last resort did a bsi reset after which the car started and drove home car started this morning but now the power steering warning comes on at random times , but no difference to steering, can anyone help me fathom these problems out or is my time done with this car I would hate to have to get another car, because i do not like the new shape, c5 x7. please any help would be appreciated thanks for now Quote
Johndouglas Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 When I had my previous C5 I sometimes got the power steering fault first thing after starting. I eventually discovered that it was all triggered by the battery voltage being too low - although it wasn't low enough to prevent the car from starting.. A new battery solved the problem. Quote
mickrochip Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 thanks , will try new battery today Quote
Johndouglas Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 Maybe better to read your battery voltage before the first start tomorrow morning. It should read around 12.7 Quote
mickrochip Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 a big thanks to everyone who replied to my query, yesterday i fitted a new battery, and all problems and lights disappeared, the esp/asr system faulty, directional headlamps system faulty was gone, now ma car appears to be all right.by the way i got my old battery tested, after about 10 mins. driving it was showing about 12.5 volts, please tell any one else if random lights and warnings come on the first thing to check is the battery again a big thank you to every body , iwill be back if i have any more problems.or for advice on the c5 Quote
paul.h Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 If the battery had lasted 11 years then it has done well, I replaced the one on our C5 at 7 years since it was not holding a charge but it really needed replacing before that. Just as well all those other faults started to show before you did any work on the brakes and then pointed you in the right direction for the fix. I will add this to the common problems topic. Quote
mickrochip Posted November 6, 2015 Author Posted November 6, 2015 hello there back again with this problem, but now it is an intermittent problem, the car will go for days without any problems ,or warning lights then it comes back, for a few days could it be dirty connections, a faulty comms unit, as i say all lights , warnings stoppd after i put in new battery, as this is now an intermittent fault it is one of the hardest to find,i have had the battery tested again , but the voltage shown is above 12.7v, any thoughts please Quote
Old Mosher Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Sound like you've found the problem, just not quite fixed it. A few things spring to mind."this afternoon after using my trailer, the faults have all disappeared" Have a good look at that socket! your brake lights are in that thing so a tenues link to the ABS system or a general power drain. On mine the sockets had a habit of filling with water, leading to all kinds on madness. The new battery, is it the correct spec for the car?Is the car actually seeing that 12.7v? I wouldn't take much to drop 0.1v here and another 0.1v there. Check every connection along the battery cables and each earth point as far back to the fuse box and ECU as you can. Anything even slightly corroded, dirty or loose is a potential voltage loss. so your 12.7v could be a millivolt ether side of minimum by the time it arrives at the ECU and so on. Quote
Teedee Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 OK - you fitted a new battery and your faults disappeared. But now they are intermittent. Is the new battery getting charged properly? When the engine is running does the battery show 14.+ volts? Quote
mickrochip Posted November 22, 2015 Author Posted November 22, 2015 thanks to all who replied to my query, after fitting battery, checking alternator output, every thing is now all right Quote
mickrochip Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 THANKS to all who replied to my query, it is now a month or so since i replaced battery, and have not had any problems since i hope this helps others with this prob as well Quote
paul.h Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 I had the message ESP/ASR fault just after starting our 2007 C5 but the battery was down to 12.1 volts since the car had not been used for a few weeks. This was the day after changing the brake fluid and the diesel fuel filter which needed the engine turning over a lot to prime the filter. After charging the battery the message did not come back.
