Lynnm5 Posted September 26, 2015 Posted September 26, 2015 Hi driving home tonight and heard a rattling from the back end of my c3. when I looked underneath the only way I can describe it is that it looks like my back exhaust box has some sort of outer casing that's peeled off with rust underneath. It's not making any other noise except for the rattling when I go over a bump Can anyone help please Quote
Johndouglas Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Is the car diesel or petrol driven? Diesel exhausts tend to last longer than those on petrol models however, the rear box is usually the first to show signs of perforation. Also the entire exhaust is suspended on rubber mountings, two of which will probably be fitted at the front end of your rear box. Gradually the rubber hangers perish and may break. You need to get them looked at before the second one goes and allows the pipework to fall to the ground. Quote
Lynnm5 Posted September 27, 2015 Author Posted September 27, 2015 Thanks for the reply, it's a c3 petrol auto 04 plate, I've looked properly today and the exhaust looks like it's still secure and it's as if it's had some sort of metal cover over the back box that's come away if that makes sense and the rating noise is the metal hitting the exhaust Quote
Johndouglas Posted September 27, 2015 Posted September 27, 2015 Is the metal cover over the top of the rear silencer? Quote
coastline taxis Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 sounds like youve lost the outer skin on the rear exhaust box. good news is it will still pass a mot if its not blowing and secure. bad news is that you know about it so itl be playing on your mind. if the outer skin is flapping around and making a noise then just cut the flap of metal off Quote
Lynnm5 Posted September 28, 2015 Author Posted September 28, 2015 Thanks looks like it is the outer skin flapping around will cut it off later Quote
paul.h Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 If it is not the exhaust, above it is an aluminium heat shield that is held to the car body and the fixing holes in the aluminium enlarge over time due to corrosion and the shield can then become loose and bang about. A couple of large penny washers will hold it back in place. The exhaust back box is held by a metal strap that can rust through so the box is no longer suported. Citroen do not sell the strap but universal ones can be bought through ebay. Quote
