Jagal Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Hi all,I am slightly new to Citroen. I bought a 4 year old C5 a few months ago. I noticed that the two back tyres are different brands to the two new front ones. One of them will need replacing in the next few months. I was reading about TPMI and when I press the button CHECK on my dash nothing comes up other than service due in XXXXX miles and NO Faults. The back tyres have a valve that has a corroded metal bit coming out of the allow wheel. The front ones look like normal black valves (rubber). If I could ask the collective advice on the following:1. Am I right in saying my TPMS is deactivated?2. Is TPMS something to stay well away from? (noted new legislation) Or should I reactivate it?3. The tyres hold their pressure well - would you suggest changing both rear wheels? I have heard of tyres blowout with corrosion near the valve - I do a lot of motorway driving and would like to be safe....Thanks! Quote
coastline taxis Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Think the reason most switch it off for is down to when a reporting valve goes wrong. They used to be quite expensive to replace so people just deactivated the system. Quote
Johndouglas Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 I had tyre pressure monitors on my previous Mk2 C5 and in nine years of ownership I didn't have any trouble with the system however, on later models the valve stems became noted for corrosion and were known to snap off just by removing a tight dust cap. You should do something about the rear valves pronto. It would be most inconvenient for you if one snapped when you were out and about. New monitors can be bought for 30-40 quid each and I believe you can also repair the stems. See this previous post.......http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/10809-tyre-pressure-monitor-valves/ Quote
seefive Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 Just picking up on this old thread, I had a sensor leak on my 11 year old C5.It was too corroded to be serviceable, but got a new one fitted and coded to the system at Kwikfit.£86 including wheel balance , around half the main dealer price. Working fine so far. Quote
MikeLane Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I wonder what Jagal did? I also wonder whether TPMI is worth bothering with in view of the apparent corrosion problem and the cost of replacing the valves.I don't have them on my VTR but I very seldom need to put more air in the tyres.Does anyone remember the Citroen advert on TV where the driver drove his ID (?) - not sure of the model - between two lorries and one of his tyres blew out? It was to show that this particular model (with hydraulic suspension) remained stable on three wheels! Those were the days! Quote
paul.h Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I think it has been a legal requirement for new cars from possibly 2012 to have tyre pressure monitoring so when you get your next car it will have it on. It is on our latest C4 and does work, we were about to set off once and the warning message came up. A check showed one of the tyres was down a bit but not enough to have been noticed before getting in the car. The tyre had a nail in it. The valves look like normal black ones with plastic caps but the sensor is inside the wheel. New valves are available without the sensor, whether they are available outside of Citroen I do not know, so when new tyres are needed it is something to ask. Quote
seefive Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 The law on this is All cars launched after November 14 must have TPMS (across the range) All cars registered from January 12 with TPMS must have the system working for the MOT So a 2015 C5 doesn't have to have TPMS, because the range was launched /licenced in 2008If they have been retro fitted, however, they must work. Seems like later models have more TPMS problems. I don't think I'm doing bad having to replace one on an 11 year old Mk2, especially as the batteries are non replaceable and not supposed to last that long.,, Quote
