moggyminor Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Hi everyone,I have a 2008 diesel berlingo, has behaved fine for a year and i have serviced regularly.I now have eco active in the display,i know all the general blurge about i have left the lights on, radio etc...but i havent. the battery is showing 12.9 volts, sometimesif i persist with the key occasionally it will crank and start. does anyone know if this can be programmed out, any suggestions to overcome what seems to be a system designed to scrap a lovely tidy well loved van.!! Any help would be really appreciated. chris Quote
coastline taxis Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 i dont think this is electrical or programming as when the immobilizer kicks in the engine will crank over but not fire up. check your battery and all earth connections. next is check the starter motor and the ignition barrel. you might have to remove the starter to get it checked out properly Quote
paul.h Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Do not worry about the eco message, that is normal and will go once the engine runs again. If you have a volt meter you can check if 12 volts is reaching the starter motor when the ignition key is turned and this will eliminate the ignition switch if you do get 12 volts. First thoughts are it could be the starter motor, possibly the solenoid or the motor brushes. When trying to start and it does not turn over can you hear a click as the starter solenoid moves ? You could also try a wire direct from the battery to the starter motor solenoid with the car in neutral - if the starter is ok it should then turn over the engine. As well as earth wires to the body, there will be one to the engine/gearbox that needs checking. Quote
Randombloke Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 I've had two older cars now where the big wire from the battery to the starter motor solenoid or from there onwards have become defective and incapable of carrying the current to crank the starter. You can test this by passing the wire with cooker cable. BX, Mk 1 and Mk 3 C5 have suffered from badly corroded earth cables. See that list from Coastline? That's gold, that is, work through it and as he says, pleas report back. Quote
