kenw Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 My speedo has stopped working (the mileage is still clocking up though). It was suggested that the speedometer transducer needed replacement, so I bought a new one. Despite a search by me, 2 proper mechanics & the parts guy from the main dealer, and a print out of the diagram of where it should be, none of us can find where it goes! I'm relying on satnav to avoid the fines, so any help would be very much appreciated. Quote

Phaeton Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Well my speedometer stopped working, was fine when I stopped the car Wednesday, got in the car Thursday nothing. The odometer is still clocking up so I asuume it must be the head. Disconnected the battery for about a hour, but still no joy. Does anyone know how to get the cluster out of the dashboard, as it looks like it will have to be replaced, with a 2nd hand one, not paying £220. Alan.. Quote
paul.h Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 If you fit a second hand speedo, beware the odometer will go to the highest reading of the old/new speedos so best to get one with similar or lower mileage. Quote

Randombloke Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Not really too worried about that. more concerned that I can't work out how to get it out. Manuel says to unhook the two lower fixings then pull carefully backwards. Quote
paul.h Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 If you look carefully at what looks like a black seal around the edge of the unit, at the bottom there are 2 small pin size holes. At these points slide something like a credit card under the seal to release the 2 clips and then pull/lever unit towards you best you can and it should come out. Quote
llolesen Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Thank you for the tip about releasing the speedometer and instrument pannel. I have seen periodic malfunction on my spedometer. At times the speedometer did not react, and in af few ocations the speedometer did show speeds of more than 180 km/h vhen driving 50 km/h.After releasing the instrument panel, i sprayed the contacts in the rear of the panel with with contact cleaner for electronic equipment. It did fix the problem. Be shure, to use a cleaner that does not harm plastic components... Quote
Phaeton Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Guys thanks for your help, took the speedo out earlier & swapped over the stepper motor from the tacho to the speedo, it's now working again. Guest Blackadder Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 :) Had the same issue with my speedo last year, Not being a mechanic worries me as my car knowledge lacks a lot :( any way for future readers on this post please heed my warning over this issue and stand firm when quizzed by idiots who work in citreon franchises...The very problem suffered was a failed speedo (the dashpod), and thanks to the internet, the problem pointed to this component failure, rev counter and odometer working fine, current speed not so fine...In the end I had to buy a new dash board which should have cost me £300.00 including fitting and v.a.t, what I paid in the end was £540  this was because I need my car to travel to work and my lack of knowledge was obvious to the garage, they kept telling me that the "Globe" test was not finding a fault, (£45.00 a test for connecting a laptop to the car!!) which worried me as they suggested I was stupid and imagined the fault was not real which I replied " if that is so then what ever speeding fines I recieve shall be passed onto you" which did not really help matters! needless to say they fixed the Dashboard after admitting that I was right, however I still had to pay the over priced amount and then the franchise closed so any arguments and letter writing to complain about the company was useless. So please research your problem look at other peoples woes and stand firm, By the way the franchise was Caledonia, based in Chester!! bigbri838 Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Had the same problem with mine and the dealer said it was either the BSI or the Speedo head. Both in the region of 300quid, scrappies wanted 120 upwards with no guarantee but an internet search informed me of a guy called ethan at clusterrepairs.co.uk. He assisted me on how to get the unit out and fixed it in a morning because I took it to him, but also does mail order. Cost 120 and guaranteed for 12months. Top bloke would recommend. Quote

I'm relying on satnav to avoid the fines, so any help would be very much appreciated. it is a small unit inside the speedo head that has gone. it happened to me and Citroen wanted to replace the whole dash.all you need is another head, remove the covers to show the back and front of the speedometer bare. remove the needle, behind the head there are two small white plastic pins holding the drive in place. unclip them by moving them to the side, a small screwdriver will do, and pull the unit out. the unit has long pins coming from it that locate into the housing. dont worry about breaking anything as it just slips out and goes back in easily. re- straighten the two plastic pins as they slide straight back into where they came from (before re-inserting), put it all back together but you need to check that the needle is in the correct position as there is no stopper. road test with a friend and pace them at about 30mph and reset the needle as required. that is the only downside to it.hope this helps as you do not need to reset the mileage in a new dash doing it this way. Citrus Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 I have fixed several speedometers. For the first ones I replaced the speedo needle motor cover. That is quite tricky job. But then I found that the complete stepper motor is also available. This is the part you need:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Citroen-C5-speedo-stepper-motor-/271277417271?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f2964e337&vxp=mtr Or this onehttp://www.freewebstore.org/Dashboard-Repair-Shop/Speedo_stepper_motor/p804140_4756582.aspx Quote
