I have an annoying whine from the transmission at 2000 rpm and 35 mph .

It occurs when power is applied . I can only compare it with the old cars when the pinion was out out adjustment to the crown wheel in the back axle. Is this a warranty claim as the whine is not loud and has anyone else experienced the same problem.

if you have a warranty it should be covered because its a bearing but check if the tranny fluid is ok it might need topping up also read the small print on the warranty before letting them do any repairs because there might be an opt out clause in it and you will foot the bill

Just to help us confirm it is not a wheel bearing, is it an auto or manual gearbox, does the noise occur in all gears at just 2000 rpm or any gear at 35 mph or just one gear, does it jump out of gear, does it occur more when going round a bend - left or right which may indicate a wheel bearing, what model is the car and how many miles has it done ?
I have replaced the gearbox output shaft berings on a couple of high (150k) mileage Saabs. On these there was a whine, louder on acceleration, more noticeable in 5th gear. On the first car I lived with it for maybe 15k miles until it eventually started jumping out of gear - the bearing face was that worn the shaft was moving a few mm.

The noise is more noticeable at 35 and 2000 RPM but it is present at other speeds, although I have not noticed it in 1st 2nd 5th & 6th gear . When you accelerate it goes off and on over run it comes back. The C5 has only done 1300 miles and just over a year old so I will take it back next week and see what they say. I had a car which did the same thing and it was the pinion bearing in back axle moving out of mesh with the crown wheel a few shims taken out and it was ok. I know this C5 is front wheel drive but their must be a similar drive gear.

The noise does not happen at higher speeds when taking power on and off. I guess the gear meshing is more positive with more load in both situations ie power on and off which you would expect in 1st and 2nd gear as the car would be accelerating. Light power on and off at a cruising speed of 35 mph 2000 RPM can create the noise.

could be the turbo but never heard mine ever only felt it cut in which wasn't impressive which it wasn't supposed to be ( not a performance car by any means ) sounds more like a tranny/drive shaft issue but not being there its only a guess

Update on the noise from my Citroen dealer who was excellent in his service to me.

A slight noise in 3rd and 4th is accepted as normal on this car at the

2000- 2500 rpm with light acceleration. I demonstrated the noise which was agreed in a speed range of 35 to 45 MPH in 3rd and 4th gear. There was not another C5 available to show me that it is normal but he was prepared to demonstrate it occuired in all C5 cars.

He did finally say that he did not think it would get worse and if it did take it back and he would request a new gear box from Citroen. No charge was made for the time spent looking into it for me. Time will tell if it is a real problem!!!

exelant that's admitting there is a problem and could be a recall

I know this is an old thread, but I just read it. If it's any help, my 2003 2.2Hdi does exactly the same thing. I replaced the gearbox oil and that made no difference. I have learned to live with it and hardly notice it now. It has not got louder over 20k miles so assume it is a characteristic of at least some of these transmissions.

I have a 2L 2001 50000 FCSH, petrol, and it whines in 1st & 2nd on acceleration so it looks like they are working on it!!!!
