New Member Starting Problems

hi have been reading your forum picking up tips i have just bought a 2.2hdi sx estate which i love only problem ive got is that it starts no problem if not been used for a few hours then my problems start drive a mile walk the dogs get back in car it will turn over but wont start and you end up holding e key turning over till it finally catches sometimes even at that i need to press th exelerator as well ive read about checking battery terminals thats not the problem anybody got any ideas as i recon im going to get stranded sooner rather than later :D

Hi when was car last serviced also what miles on it,does it run ok when warmed up,whats the mpg,does it start first time when cold or has it got to be cranked over when cold as well

could be an air leak into the diesel system any pressure deviation will cause that

cooling fan could be an issue because it shouldn't come on like that and as im still on the older engines where technology is the C5 is a priority for me for knowing how it works because I might get one ;) most of the system is the same as the older cars so no big deal there its just the electronics im interested in,

with the older cars the fan stays on as an emergency feature when something stopped working like the coolant temp sensor/fuse/relay, as for testing for air ressure loss you need the diagnostic equipment to monitor the system ( data logging is the way it does that ).

It is normal for the fan to come on with a cold engine if the airconditioning is also on.....if you turn the air con off the fan should also stop unless required due to excess engine temperature.

 

With regard to poor restarting when warm......its possible that one ore more of the injectors have failed internally and are causing excessive leak off on there return pipes and are unable to allow sufficient pressure to build up for correct fuel quantity to be injected.

 

To check for fuel leak off you need to remove the rubber return pipes from the injectors and check the quantity of fuel returned down them over a period of about 5 minutes with the engine idling......you will need 4 containers to do this as you will be comparing them against eache other to see which has returned most as this will be the culprit.

totally agree with you there KFK but that would be related to AC if it were on but if not and the engine was cold that would be a different issue,

I only say that because he doesn't say if the engine was hot or cold ;)

thanks for the info your quite correct no 2 is the culprit according to test now for the next problem how the hell do you get it out undid bolts tried to pull put wont come tried heavy tactics with bar to leaver out still not playing is there aknack to it that im missing and you were right about fan as well bulb out on air con switch witch made me think it wasnt on

dont know when seviced just bought the car no it starts perfect as long as it hasnt been driven for at least 3 hours and its only got 72 thou on the clock have had injector checked now it seems ok everybody keeps telling me its something to do withthe retun as the diesel apears to rn back to tank tottally confused

we had a customer who had the same problem Wouldnt start when hot unless it was cranked over and over) and it eventualy turned out to be the crankshaft sensor unit. we were fortunate enough to have a car sitting there so that we could swap sensors over without having to buy them first so swapped crank sensor over and car now starts first time everytime

having been on an American site for several years this was a common fault and was down to EVAP system as any escaping fumes from the fuel say through the fuel cap seal system pressure lose would set the EVAP system in a shutdown mode and only repeated cranking to build the pressure back up would get it going but without a fault code to assist diagnosing the problem I can only give you things to check out,

Didn't know they had this system on diesel engines.

 

really ;) does it have a catalytic converter? EGR system? canister purge valve? all are linked to the EVAP which is there to prevent fuel leaks and explosions diesel or petrol 2000+ that is

ok it sounds like the fuel cut off switch has been activated which shuts the fuel system off, I can only go by the xantia HDi because I dont have data on the C5 but the switch is near the driver side suspension sphere,

Ive managed to get a copy of Citroen EPS / TIS 2008 but having problems installing it i cant get the pictures to work but ill get there in the end

you really dont want to be placing 12v wires onto c5 components as a lot of them are lower than 12v and youl blow them. the diesel system on a c5 is very high pressure system so if your not a 100% certain of what your doing then put the car in for a diagnostic (it will work out cheaper in the long run). There could be any number of reason why the fuel pump isnt working and without the right tools itl just be pure luck if you find it

You could try fuse 5 in the under bonnet fuse box........if you PM me a chassis number i'll have check see if anything else on the circuit.........there are various wiring layouts without chassis number cant access the correct diagrem

hi everybody im a veryhappy bunny car is purring like a pusseycat thanks for all your imput it was aleek of on injevtor 4 wich didnt get picked up first time round new injector cured the starting prob by then i had the dreaded anti pollution and asp esr message car on limp mode this turned out to be maf sensor new one gotno warnings no half power and im on top of the world thanks to youse very helpfull people
