Can someone please advise how the different suspension systems on the C5 are identified. There seems no distinction between Hydro-active and conventional on the Citreon site, neither on second hand car details. Also what does the initials 'VTR' stand for.

Has anyone experienced both and which is preferred?

There are only two variants if you discount the most recent release of C5s.

Hydractive 3 = bog standard.

Hydractive 3+ = the good stuff.

As for VTR! Haven't a clue.

I think you are referring to the new C5:

SX and VTR trim have standard suspension, the Exclusive models have Hydractive 3+. (but a VTR can be ordered with Hydractive 3+ I think.)

Not driven either but based on the various magazine tests:

Hydractive 3+ better on motorways and A roads. Standard suspension a little more compliant around town.

VTR = middle trim level, doesn't mean anything, Exclusive = all bells and whistles like laminated side windows.

As an approximation, VTR trim equals:

Zetec Mondeo

SE Peugeot 407

Exclusiv Insignia

Dynamique Laguna

SR Avensis

etc etc.

On our mark 1 VTR there is a sport setting on the suspension which stiffens it up. I use this when it is windy, sometimes when pulling the caravan, if there are a lot of bends - just helps stop the car rolling about as much.

There used to be four trim levels on the C5. Sx,VTR,VTR+, and exclusive. Now on 08 onwards there is VTR, VTR+ and exclusive. Two types of suspension - Hydro 3+ and standard springs. Ususally 2.2 hdi and exclusive come with Hydro 3+ and 6 speed box.

It's been a Citroen thing for a lot of years to use letter groups to identify different levels of trim. During the 80's AXs used TZX; RD and TRD. In the 90's BXs used RD; TGD; TZD and TRD --- but UK models were rebranded DTR (They thought TRD looked too much like TuRD) Xantias and XMs followed the same pattern.

The Hydroactive 3+ has a SPORT button between the raise and lower buttons.
