Guest NickC5 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I have started to get a problem where I get an ESP warning when I brake reasonably hard. The service light comes on, along with a ESP and ABS failure warning. Also when this happens, my cruise control won't work. Performance is not affected and I can reset it all by switching off the engine then restarting. This has happened 4 times so far, and each time after a sustained drive on the motorway - it doesn't happen on short journeys. The car went for a service 2 weeks ago, and they couldn't find a problem. Since then it has happened twice more. I checked the codes today but none were saved. It's going back to the garage on Wednesday, but I wondered if anyone has come across this before or has any idea what t could be. 2009 C5 tourer Thanks. Quote
Johndouglas Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I wondered if anyone has come across this before Yes it's happened on mine. I was driving from Malaga to home a couple of years ago and the fault appeared on the screen. Very worrying for a time. It stayed until the next service area stop. After the break the fault disappeared, never to return. Quote
Roger W Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 This happened to my 2009 C5 VTR 2.0 hdi Tourer just after I had it. It occurred 4 times in all but reset itself each time shortly after. My garage replaced a 'brake balancing device' and it has not recurred.Coincidentally I have today received a Recall Notice for replacement of a component in the 'braking assistance circuit vacuum pump' which could have been the same area. Thanks for the reply. I also had a recall notice today and they are going to do it at the same time they look at this problem. I might mention your experience as well. It's a bit strange that it only happens after motorway (long, constant speed?) journeys and not around town. Oh well, cars are becoming too clever for their own good if you ask me. Think I'll get a 2CV next. Quote
Roger W Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 My 2009 C5 Tourer is the new shape. Never had any problems with my old 2005 C5 Estate except the tailgate window stopped working! I think they all did!! Quote
Guest NickC5 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Is this on a new shape C5 ? Yes, it is the new C5 Estate (Tourer). Had more problems with this car in the year since I bought it than in my old C5, Xantia and BX combined. The fuse box needed replacing just after I bought it - had to be ignominiously trailered home for the first time ever, and now this. Glad it's still under warranty. Quote

Hmm looks like a Renault Laguna next time for me then ( sorry about the swear words) Quote

Guest kimosabe Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Are Renaults noted for their reliability ? In my opinion NO...I bought a 2nd hand 2001 Laguna tourer 1.9 DCi, Turbo went at 70,000 miles.Wrecked everything, intercooler, engine, the lot basically.Fixed under warranty at a cost of £2,800.At 107.000 miles timing belt went, estimated repair £1,200 (maybe more said the garage) I couldn't get a 2nd hand engine,So I scrapped it.Having said that it was a great car when it was running.I have heard since that Lagunas are well known for blowing turbos and timing belts...... I was talking about the Laguna 3 (2008 onwards). If you go on What Car site, ignore the "professional" reviews and look at the reader comments - it gets full marks. No problems reported. The older model was not do good... Quote

Roger W Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I have the same experience. A petrol BX, 2 Zantia SX Estates and a C5 Exclusive Estate, all HDi, over a period of 15 years with a Peugeot 405 Estate in between. No real problems just the usual consumables over 50 to 60 k each. I wanted an Exclusive new C5 but couldn't find a manual version so settled on a VTR. I have had Citroen Direct cars since the BX, about 6 months old with around 3 - 6 k. I do miss the ride but otherwise the new one drives well, goes well and is reasonably economical and comfortable.BUT the aforementioned warning light saga, a new fuse box, replacement heater unit, replaced central control unit, new window motor, 4 recalls already, and all before the first proper service! (I do a 12 months oil change and check up. 20 k is too long to leave it if you're only doing 10k a year.)My garage is a main dealer, are always helpful, always get a service loan car but it's like living with a time-bomb! Nothing is ever in stock. It's always 2 visits. I haven't had a car like this since a very duff Cavalier in the early '80's. My wife's Fiat Punto did 15 years with only servicing and consumables. Still on the original clutch. The replacement Panda has only been in for 1 interim service in the 2 years we've had it. I never wanted to believe the stories about Citroen but I am wondering...... seefive Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 This is turning into an interesting thread! When the mk3 c5 came out I got an invite to the local main dealer for their launch do, and got talking to the salesman who told me it was a "shared technogy" car, with Audi and the dreaded Toyota being the other parties. Given Toyota's problems, which started in 2008 and got hushed up until 2010, these multiple problems kind of make sense. There are a few posts on here about brake response/failure which are really scary. I notice the Peugeot 508 has just come out - looks like a C5 clone, hopefully better made. Sounds like Citroen have some serious work to do. Quote
PICASSOCONVERT Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Hmm looks like a Renault Laguna next time for me then ( sorry about the swear words) Yes, it looks like as if it might be the end of the road, so to speak, for me and Citroen, too. At the moment my 03 HDi Exclusive estate with 68,000 mile on the clock is going well (famous last words), but give it another couple of years and DPF filter/timing belt replacement come along, probably followed by unsolveable anti-pollution faults and minor niggles (rear window not opening, sagging tailgate, failed high level brake light etc) it will be time to despair. The question is, are all modern cars just as bad or worse? I had the DPF removed from my old (01) 2.2HDi estate last Monday for my son(didn't solve all the problems, but helped) and the chaps who did it were also doing 08 reg BMW's and Audis - telling me that it was around £2k to replace the DPF on those models. A great shame because when a C5 is going well I thinks it's marvellous - quiet, comfy, economical, roomy and a good tow car. Quote
