Thrumming Noise When Driving - What Is It?
Randombloke replied to a topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
Jack up the car and look for a blister starting to form on the tread of your front tyres. -
Is there an oil temperature gauge? Does the water warm up first then the oil, or do they both warm up slowly together? If the latter I would suspect the thermostat, as Coastline has pointed out. Check all hoses for air leaks, especially the swirl control valve one.
-
Personally I prefer this version of it. John Douglas's post in the Battery Swap and Reset thread You need to avoid malfunction of BSI related items. @ JD thanks once again.
-
You forgot to say "Thank you, Coastline!" He is a top bloke and gives excellent advice.

Search the forum. Use the correct battery disconnection procedure. Charge it fully on a mains charger. When it is fully charged, see if measures as good. If bad, replace it. Reconnect it if its good. Follow procedure posted on forum, search again. If it then goes flat, find the problem with the thing making it go flat. Don't run a C5 with an iffy battery - it's not worth the aggravation.

If it doesn't share a fuse with anything essential, then pull the fuse out and see if it still happens. Before you pull the fuse, tap/gently slap the steering column from underneath and see if it happens. Take the rear panel off and see if slapping the wiper motor causes it - it might be that there is a fault with the parking of it. Failing that simply leave the wires unplugged from the motor unit. HTH.

I would check the swirl control valve and the intake side for leaks. When that draws a blank, it would be a very good idea to take Coastline's advice. The diagnostic stuff costs a lot of money and there has to be a return on an investment.

Try one of those CD cleaners that you insert into the drive. Click link below, safe as it's on Amazon. Hama CD Laser Cleaning Disc

Important question - Does the gauge read full when you fill the tank? If so, the inaccuracy is exactly as John Douglas explained. MY BX was the same, and my 406 (very close to being the same car minus hydraulics) is not far off. If not: The fuel gauge is usually a resistor that is short when full and maximum resistance when empty. If this is the case then shorting the wire going to the sensor to ground should make the fuel gauge read full. If it does not, then the gauge on the dashboard is faulty, or there is a high resistance path in the wiring. If shorting the wire to ground makes the gauge read full, then the gauge is fine. Worth getting a wiring diagram if you want to fix this problem, as it's not worth risking shorting wires to ground without knowing exactly what's on them. You could also measure the voltage to the sender - this is sometimes from a voltage regulator which may have gone wrong, sending the wrong voltage so you getting the wrong reading.

The Xantia and XM AFAIK were the last Citroens with the Citroen braking system that just measures the force you apply. The pedal hardly moves but that is not issue once you are used to it. It's normal. I prefer it to the very spongy, over servo'ed feeling you get from the Peugeot system that has now been placed on all the new hydraulically suspended Citroens.

That's true, but it is worth checking with this model that you do not have after market carpets stopping the accelerator going to full on. Also, check the micro switch under the pedal clicks when you push the pedal to the floor. Carpets often stop this happening and there is a bit more power when the switch clicks. Check that the throttle position sensor is going to full if you can (I've not been able to find this in a 1.6 HDi though) as they suffer from cable stretch, but at 10k unlikely. I think you are best off jacking the car up and comparing the front and rear wheel for free movement. The front and rear will never be the same freedom (the front has transmission and handbrake to add to things) but you can get an idea of any wheel that's binding before you go to the garage. However, garages don't check for brake drag IME. As you say, though, with only 10k on the clock this is unlikely.

I would check the front brakes for brake drag. I've had issues with this on my C5.

You might need to think about something called file sharing software. Find a teenager with over 2,000 music albums who has never paid for anything. They can explain it. I'm an old g*t who knows nothing about that sort of thing - I only ever buy Thin Lizzy CDs from Amazon. Make sure that you do not do anything illegal, of course. Do not breach any copyright or you will be a very naughty person and the Internet Police might have to talk to you or cut off your broadband access. Also check that there are no CDs or any other software supplied/bundled in your car that might allow to create the necessary on an SD card.

Hi Mark, It is always worth searching this and the other forum for problems or advice before doing things. There is a PDF with the detailed instructions and photos as to how to fix the rear screen problem. All you need to do is ask any of the people who have offered to mail it to anyone needing it. The headlight washers only work if the headlights are on. Disconnecting the battery without following the procedure is asking for trouble. If you intend to DIY this car it's worth having the Haynes manual or the RTA manual if you have any knowledge of French. If you get the PDF on the rear screen it shows the fixings for the high level brake light and what to undo. If you compare a similar VW Passat and a C5 they have similar new prices but at 4 years/80,000miles the Passat will be worth double the C5. Big Citroens depreciate badly for a good reason, no one wants them (or any any other large PSA car like a 605/607, 407, Xantia or XM). It's cheap for a reason. When it's running, especially if it has the H3+ suspension (optional extra or Exclusive/SE) it's got lovely ride and fantastic handling. On all except 1.6 versions the car cruises very quietly at high speeds. The 2.2 also has a particulate filter and it would be as well to know the implications of this before it needs filter replacement or Eolys top up. There is an official route and a more radical unofficial route, but doing nothing is not an option.

C5 1.8i Wont Start And Makes Ticking Noise
Randombloke replied to a topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
Measure the battery voltage with a voltmeter. Will tell you something and better than guessing. -
You haven't told us what the fault with the car is - you're making it hard for yourself. This is the TPS close up. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_128CsRaOoBg/TR89ZvrsgvI/AAAAAAAAArc/FkfVYhkEa5E/IMG_0039s.JPG This is a wider shot to give you an idea of location. This is a 2.2 diesel but they are not that different: http://lh6.ggpht.com/_128CsRaOoBg/TR89Zp7wY0I/AAAAAAAAArw/JeVX_ZZ2B8w/IMG_0042s.JPG

In all Peugeot Citroen cars I've dealt with it's usually behind the battery, close to the bulkhead where a LHD car would have the throttle pedal on the other side of the bulkhead. There is a cable going into it, and a half wheel on which the cable runs. It's a sealed unit so it can't be repaired (as far as I know). Why do you think there is something wrong with it? You haven't actually posted the details of the fault. It might be the MAF sensor? I will try and link to an image here if you ask. It would make sense to simply buy the Haynes Manual if you wish to try and fix this car.
-
Sounds like the climate control panel itself is faulty. I say this because the rear screen heater button isn't working. It might be something simple like a loose connection on the back of the unit. It may respond to a BSI reset (carefully followed procedure for battery disconnection).
-
Check if the rear wheels are splayed outwards. If they are it's worn swing arm bearings. If they are not it may still be the same but the fault is in the early stages. Best fixed while damage is limited to the bearings only.

It's worth checking that all of the wheels on the car have the reporting valves fitted. These are solid metal stem, not flexible stem. If one wheel does not have a reporting valve then it's likely the reporting valve is on the spare in the boot and that has gone soft/flat. With C5s with reporting valves it pays to make sure the 4 wheels with those valve are actually on the car. The spare should have a standard valve to avoid unwanted warnings.

Find the fuse for the radio and pull it as a short term fix, then put it back later.
-
I can't remember the ignition switch setting, whether on or off but you have to press and hold the folding button for more than 5 seconds to turn mirror folding on and off.

Isn't the C-Crosser and 4007 a derivative or simply a badging exercise of a Mitsubishi 4 wheel drive? The Outlander?

How fast does the engine turn over when cold? Please measure battery voltage first thing in the morning before switch on, then after switch on but before turning the engine over, then after it starts, then when it's been running for 10 minutes or so. Make sure earth strap and battery positive are securely on and clean.
-
Please describe the fault in more detail if you want help that is relevant. Is the light or warning on all the time? What sort of condition is the battery in? Which model and year of C5?
