Did you have the juddering before you renewed the discs? You can tell whether or not the caliper is causing the brakes to bind or not by jacking up the wheel and turning it, first with the brake on, then with it off. If the brake is binding, there won't be much difference in ease of turning. My 306 is very similar to a ZX so chances are calipers are similar. To remove the caliper, take out the brake pads, noting the way the springs fit. Undo the brake hose and remove the two bolts holding the caliper to the swivel hub. Bolts may or may not be torx bolts. Lift away the caliper and the mounting plate.

Can you be sure the tank was half full? Because the needle points to half it doesn't necessarily mean it's half full. My 2ltr C5 has two extremes of fuel economy. If I start with a cold engine and drive the mostly uphill 8 miles to the M25, I'm lucky if I get 30mpg. But once on the motorway, at a steady 65, I get 50mpg. A drive down to Dover with cruise set at 55mph can give me 60mpg.
-
For MOTs that is. Took the first of my four for a test this morning. The Saxo. It got through with an advisory for a weak handbrake. Not surprising - the rear drums haven't been off yet. The 306 got a similar advisory last year so new wheel pistons and shoes need to go on during the next two weeks.

Recomended North East Garages For C5 Additive Reset
Johndouglas replied to a topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
No I can't help on that - but have a look on FCF's map of Lexia owners. There may be one near to you who would do it for you. -
Have you looked under the bonnet on the nearside suspension leg. Usually a 3 or 4 letter code on a label with 20mm high lettering. Failing that try Googling Auto paints. Some of the companys can tell you the colour from your supplied reg. number.

You didn't say which engine and which year, but dependng on that, the fault could be that the FAP requires changing and the eolys fluid needs replenshing which if you can't DIY, you're lookng at several 100s of £s.
-
Whatever it was you wiped, it wasn't the FAP. That's under the car and it's part of the exhaust system. To get to it you'll need to disconnect two sensors, undo the exhaust clips and take the section out. But you're right! When C5's first came out, it was only the 2.2s that had FAPs and eolys fluid. Now they've all got them. When the change came about, I'm not sure. My 2005 has, your 2003 maybe, maybe not. Best to look underneath. Lexia plugs into a 16pin socket behind a panel in the glovebox.
-
Mine is 2005 and it uses 176.
-
You need to get your C5 on a Lexia and get the codes read. Thats the diagnostic machine used by Cit/Pug dealers. Cost will be around £45. Home mechanics use a Chinese clone Lexia which can be bought on ebay for £120 or so. Some guys on this site own them and on FCF many more do and they have a map on their forum showing the homes of those who are willing to allow you to visit for a 'plugin' session. It sounds as though your FAP is getting blocked. Maybe Eolys fluid is depleated.
-
If it were my vehicle I would change the oil & filter, change the air filter, put some injector cleaner like Millers or diesel Redex in the fuel tank, then see how it is
-
There are two types of Eolys fluid. It's important that you get the correct one. Early cars used DPX42 and later models used 176. Unfortunately I can't tell you when the change date was.e

Engine rattle or bodywork rattle?

No just undo the screws and pull the tray downwards. There are four along the back and one near the rear wheel. The side piece is attached.

Fitting A Tow Bar. Removing The Rear Under Tray
Johndouglas replied to a topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
There are four screw along the back and one on the side. The side piece up to the wheel arch is attached, so it's all joined. Undo the screws and it just pulls out. After fitting the tow bar, I didn't bother replacing mine. No need to remove the bumper, although some of the bolts are difficult to reach. -
Originally the car would come with two. I keep mine in the drop down flap at the end of the dashboard; the other in the plastic foam packer in the spare wheel well. Doubt whether you can get one now. If you cant find it, get four ordinary wheel bolts and get a quick-fit joint to change them.

OK! Hello and welcome. The site's not too busy at the moment probably because lately we've been over-run with spammers and it's been just too much effort to wade through dozens of pages of rubbish. Guys soon drift away. As you see, I've got a Saxo in my collection but all of them are oil burners.

It's something I've been thinking about with my own - particularly with it coming close to requiring to be refilled with Eolys. But then I saw this and it made me wonder if it was the way to go. This is copied from another forum whose members are mainly working mechanics and MOT testers. They are supposed to be notes made during a VOSA seminar:- From 1st January 2012, the new test items will be: Warning lights for the engine, airbags, main beam, electronic stability, brake fluid, electronic parking brake, tyre pressure monitoring. Light switches to check that front and rear work at the same time. Headlamp adjuster presence. Steering lock operation. Seatbelt safety devices, no mechanical flags have been triggered to indicate a deployed seatbelt pretensioner. HID headlamps have washers and self levelling. Visible wiring security and condition. Battery security. Engine mountings and the structure to which they are attached. Power steering fluid, where the level can be seen without removing the reservoir cap. Rear doors open from the outside. Driveshaft gaitors, will include inner gaitors on front wheel drive, may even include a non steered axle. Ball joint dust cover condition. Electrical testing of 13 pin tow bar sockets. Leak detection test for LPG systems. Fuel pipe condition. Missing anti pollution equipment, catalyst or DPF. There will be a new section introduced for inappropriate repairs or modifications, which may include things like stretched tyres, inappropriately low suspension. From 1st September 2013 for cars registered after 24th July 2010,brake performance requirements will change from 25% on a steered axle; to 30% on all axles for imbalance, from 50% to 58% for service brake efficiency. But if the FAP had just had its innards taken out - how would they know? Only by an increase of smoke - which FAP removal isn't supposed to do.

Depends what you want to tow. If it's just a trailer then a single socket is what you need. If you're pulling a caravan you'll need 12S in addition to the 12N. On cars that are multiplexed it's not enough just to pick up the wiring from the rear road lights. Better to put them through a Smart7 relay. It won't add much to the overall cost. If you need the 12S for caravan towing, then there's another relay needed to control battery charging and fridge supply.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem because judging by this and other forums, UK Citroens frequently end up in France and Spain. In fact when I sold my 2.1 Xantia in 2005, it was collected by an English guy and immediately driven down to Dover on its way to its new home in Normandy.
-
I would dearly like to replace my 2005 C5 Exec Estate but I too am put off by adverse reports on the latest C5 models. I've owned hydropnuematic Citroens for over twenty years and would like to continue. We also have in the family three other PSA cars, none of which have been to a garage - other than for an MOT ticket - since their warranties expired, so my opinion of PSA reliability is high. But currently as far as the C5 goes, they have lost their way. My present C5 is the first car I've owned where 600 miles can be covered in a day without beginning to feel fatigue.

Xsara Information And Service Manual
Johndouglas replied to a topic in Questions about the Citroen Xsara
My daughter runs a 2002 HDI model. I've looked after it from new and manage reasonably well with Haynes Manual 3751 which covers Xsaras from '97-2000. -

There must be a difference between Mk1 and facelifted towbars because they have different part numbers, but how much difference, I don't know. Maybe seach sites like Witter and bring up the diagrams for each car.
