Just looking at a C5 estate 2004 registered 30/9/2004 car is 2179 cc 169b/km according to DVLA its an Exclusive HDi

and 6 speed - the front has the 1 silver bar and chevron, which i thought was pre facelift

am wanting to buy a tow bar for it and they are listed 2001-2004 OR 2004-2008 so am confused which model it is here is a link with the picture, can someone tell me which model this is please?

I didn't think the 6 speed came in until mk2

Certainly the front grill and also the headlights are all Mk 1.   Looking at Citroenservice.com ML6 boxes were fitted to late Mk1s.   I would think you are safe going for the 2001-2004 towbar.   The actual change over date from Mk1 to Mk2 was in October of 2004, although some old stock Mk1 were probably registered later in the year

If you have a bump and are repairing it yourself you can put a mk1 front end onto a mk11 and vice versa as the chassis are the same. Weve done it (wings, bonnet.bumper and grill). Might be worth your while to hpi the car to see its history

The interior will decide it.

Mk1's have green illumination with a separate display for the climate control.

Mk2 has no separate display, and orange ilimunation.

Certainly looks like a Mk1 from the photograph

Our first C5 was reg July 2004 and a mark 1 VTR hatchback with the 2.2 hdi 136 bhp engine and 6 speed. The Hungaro wheels also were the same as in your photo and according to a brochure I have for Sep 2003 were on the VTR and exclusive and all 2.2 hdi were 6 speed (unless auto). A 2005 brochure for the mark 2 says these wheels were only on the VTR and the exclusive had Suzuka wheels. The first mark 2s with the same 2.2 hdi engine were automatics. The later 2.2 hdi 173 bhp engine appeared a few years later, maybe 2007.

So, it is looking as if it is a mark 1. If you go on Parkers car reviews for the C5, there are likely some internal photos showing the dash/radio which changed for the mark 2 as well as external photos. The headlights also changed for the mark 2.

The reason for the difference in towbars will likely be the mark 2 rear bumper sticks out more (21mm).

If you are going to tow a caravan the mark 1 kerb weights are lower than the mark 2 (manual gearbox, tow weights from brochures but more details are in the car handbooks)

- mark 1 2.2 hdi estate 1518 kg (not inc 75 kg for driver)  max tow 1450 kg (may reduce on hills if car payload is max)

- mark 2 2.2 hdi (173 bhp) estate 1610 kg (not inc 75 kg) max tow 1600 kg

- mark 2 2.0 hdi 138 bhp estate 1532 kg (not inc 75 kg) max tow 1600 kg (but reduces on hills if car payload is max)

Thanks looks like a mk1 then - no problem with towing as my caravan is a 2 berth Bailey Hunter Lite, which was previously towed with a clio!!!  did a check with the caravan club and its well in both mk1 and mk2, The car checks out ok and hopefully pick it up tomorrow so will check the interior dials etc and at least that will tell me if its a mk1 for sure, can then order a tow bar.

The 2007 Citroen brochure shows the 2.0 hdi 138 bhp and 2.2 hdi 173 bhp can have manual and auto gearboxes. The 2005 brochure shows the first mark 2s with the 2.2 hdi 136 bhp engine were only automatics and the 2.0 hdi 138 bhp were only manuals.
