Hi . Having just bought my 2.2HDI 03 estate.

The seller drove it on the test drive as I had not brought my insurance and it seemed fine .

When I took the keys and drove off the accelerator pedal seems very close to the floor ie just a couple of inches of movement before it hits the stop and much lower than the other 2 pedals . It also seems to be a little slow to respond when the pedal is pressed . I have just moved from a Alfa 156 2ltr  petrol so it may just be me but just wondered if the pedal should be level with the other pedals . If not can it be adjusted .

Thanks in advance . Tilt.

I expect you know that the accelerator pedal doesn't connect to the fuel pump as in times of old. It goes to a sensor positioned below and behind the battery. It's often possible that slack can be taken up there.

Hi Many thanks for the prompt response.

I actually thought it was connected at the footwell via a multiplug to a sensor there but you say its on a cable to the sensor at the rear of the battery . Many thanks I go have a look .

The cables do stretch. Seen this fault on a few cars. Easiest to put a brick on the accelerator engine off and check that it is hitting the end stop under the bonnet. Not easy to adjust without removing stuff.

Looking at a photo of the footwell in our old 2004 C5 2.2 hdi when it was 2 years old and about 16k miles and the clutch pedal is the highest, followed by the brake pedal and the accelerator one is a lot lower.

Thanks everyone for the help . Just back from a holiday {350 mile round trip} and the car was a pig . Loss of power whenever it felt like it .

I will try and see if I can get someone in the first instance to adjust the pedal travel then deal with whatever may be causing the intermittent loss of power. The Pedal is actually over 2 inches lower than Brake and Clutch pedals  . Thanks again .

Approx 2 inches looks about the distance in the photo but I do not have the car to measure it.

For the lack of power, are there any warning messages or is the engine management light on ? Possibilities could include a blocked fuel filter (which I think you are doing), blocked exhaust dpf, broken swirl flap actuator plastic connector at the gearbox end of the cylinder head.

Hi Paul . Thanks. On way back from holiday one warning showed momentarily { no others appear } and that was to do with a filter blocked but sadly due to stupidity and old age I cannot remember which one it said .

Sounds like its the particle/dpf filter    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIESEL-PARTICULATE-FILTER-DPF-CITROEN-C5-DC-2-2-03-2001-08-2004-11-/140862248093?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20cc0b549d     plus a eloys oil refil unless already done.  Get a diagnostic done to confirm this. theres a list on the site of members with diagnostic euipment that will help you check it out and see if a member is near you

Hi cheers again  . Not sure what level the eloys at but may end up just getting the diagnostics done . I assume being pre 2004 its no obd  type for diagnostics and would prob have to be taken to a Citroen dealer ? Any ides the sort of cost for e eloys fill ?

On ebay eolys fluid is about £40 a litre and a complete fill is 3 litres. A Citroen dealer may be more or less than this. Refilling is needed about 70 to 80k miles so if your car is not at this sort of mileage you should check the service history to see if it has been done. As well as filling up, the car will need to be told it has been filled by a diagnostic or it will give low level messages but the fluid will continue to be dosed. This is since the level is not measured but is calculated based on the number of fuel tank fills. The car needs to be told the fluid has been refilled and the level calculation reset.

To do things like the eolys fluid will need a Lexia, copies are available for around £100 from ebay and easydiagnostics that are installed on a lap top. The member list able to do diagnostics is in the C5 technical section http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/20345-diagnostic-help/

The diagnostic 16 pin socket is in the glove box behind the pull off panel at the left side. If buying a code reader you need to check it will do your car with it being before 2004 but things like the eolys fluid would not be covered by a low cost reader.

Thanks again Paul . Had a chap over to replace tyres and do a std service on the car and sadly extract the oil via the dipstick tube thanks to a savage having wrecked the sump plug. He is going to get the relevant software and come along this monday and do a diagnostic on the car for me and see what the story is .

Thanks again to all for the replies . F

The sump plug does not use a spanner or socket to remove it, instead it uses a square or hex key, may be 8 mm. The hole in the plug may be full of dirt to confuse the mechanic. Check the right oil has been used since you have a dpf and a low saps oil is recommended - could be Total Ineo quartz ECS 5w-30 full synthetic.

It is not advisable to remove the oil by the dip tube since the sludge will remain in the sump. I would be tempted to get the sump plug sorted if the correct key will not work (maybe stillsons on the outside round edge will undo it) and change the oil again.

If I remember, later I will move this topic to the C5 section since it will be more relevant there and is then more likely to be read by C5 owners.
