lawser Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Last week the stop warning lights came on with some kind of brake warning while my wife was out, she stopped the car, waited 5 mins & restarted, lights stayed on but no brake warning on display....Hasn't happened again.Tonight i just noticed the High level stop light is on, it's quite dim but goes out after a while, brake lights all seem to function ok....Any ideas ? Cheers, Paul Quote

Cheers, Paul There's water in it if it's an estate? - probably causing some sort of partial short. Removal to dry out is easy BUT involves clips and screws, and the clips are easy to break. When I fixed the rear glass I noticed that this area was damp, so I dried it out. Quote
old'uns Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 i've had this happen to me, walk away from car & noticing that hi-level light very dim.brake warning & stop on dash whilst doing 80ish, it then felt like the car put it's brakes on & slowed to 70, very scary!!turned out i'd somehow managed to get a double filament bulb into the brake-light holder!swapped out for a proper one, hey presto, problem solved.i suggest you check all the bulbs, could well be water ingress or earthing problems as well as a multitude of other things seemingly not related to us mere mortals! paul.h Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Unlike most other cars I have had, on our C5 (mark 1 2.2.hdi VTR hatchback), the rear light and fog light are a combined double filament bulb and the rear stop light is a separate single filament bulb. Quote
DaveHerns Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I've had 2 2006 C5 Estates and the high level brake light has always glowed dimly as I've been closing the garage doorNo idea why , unless it's some sort of feedback in the wiring but it's done no harm Quote

Thanks Quote
Johndouglas Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 have i got wrong bulbs in, You have! You should have a 21/5 double filament bulb in the foglight/tail light and a single 21w bulb in the brake light. That's funny French for you! Quote
lawser Posted August 23, 2009 Author Posted August 23, 2009 Folks, Don't know if this will help any of you or not, but on closer inspection of the rear brake lights i noticed that you can indeed fit the bulbs in the wrong way. Both of the bulbs had blown on the two rear side lights of my wifes C5 Estate, now whether that was the reason why the Brake warning lights were coming on in the car dash or not i don't know but when i was removing the blown bulbs & replacing i noticed that one of the bulbs was looser in the holder than the other. It seems that even though the bulbs have locating lugs at different heights you can still fit them 180 degrees out, since they've both been replaced & fitted properly the High visibility light problem has dissapeared as has the warning lights on the dash.As it turned out i couldn't find any faults with the high vis light but it gave me the kick up the backside to fix the tailgate window which was always on the to do list, so thanks to everybody for all their help. lawser Quote

fatboyjt Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I think I'd better have a look at mine .However my rear brake light was glowing dimly even from new and before I'd changed any bulbs Hi, Happend to me a couple of months ago, it seems that when both rear bulbs are gone, you get the warning message and the rear high level light on (its something to do with the blown elements in the bulbs creating some kind of short back into the system, this doesnt happen all the time, but when the element in the bulbs shorts, it powers the light and the car thinks your breaking and gives the fault) the light only stays on for around 15 minutes when you stop, as it seems to be on the feed that covers accessories in the car that shuts off automatically after a period of time. swap the bulbs for nice new ones and it will go away <_< Quote
DaveHerns Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 All my rear lights work yet I still get the high level light glowing dimly .Mine has 21/5 watt bulbs in the side / brake light , the fog light is separate. I've given up worrying as it doesn't seem to be doing any harm Quote
Johndouglas Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 .Mine has 21/5 watt bulbs in the side / brake light , the fog light is separate. Shouldn't be! The double filament bulb should work on the side and foglight. It's the stop light that's on it's own. Quote
