Hello guys,

well this is my first post, probably 1 of many. Basicly I have just bought a C5 1.6HDI (first ever diesel) and all I want to know is the best engine oil to use for this car has I have been to 2 motor factors both offering differnt oils, your help would be most helpful

Any decent quality synthetic of 10w/40 or 5w/30 grade. 1.6HDI's are well known for goosing their turbos. Ignore the 20000 mile recommendation and change the oil and filter much earlier.

Sell it get rid of it or find someone you dont like and give them it. But if your going to keep it make sure you use a flushing oil aswell. John is spot on with them doing turbos in check out any ford forum as there the same engine as whats in a focus Also take his advice regarding the oil change intervals

thanks for the answer guys, will change the oil ASAP, wish I knew about the turbo before I bought it

I'm about to do my own service (2003 C5 2.2HDi estate manual) and was wondering what the current best advice is on engine oil.

The RTA manual quotes semi-synthetic or synthetic 5W-40, API CF or SJ/CF, ACEA A3.98/B3.98.

I was looking around on-line at Shell Helix 5W-40 (which is what the Citroen dealer used) and came across this which appears to help specifically with DPF's:

"Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Low SAPS Engine Oil - 5 Litres About Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Low SAPS Engine Oil

Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L engine oil is the latest generation fully synthetic motor oil designed specifically to meet the needs of all Ford and Mazda diesel engines fitted with diesel particulate filters (also suitable for diesel engines without a DPF fitted). Shell Helix Diesel Ultra is suitable for Ford normal and extended service intervals.

Shell Helix Diesel Ultra engine oil contains ultimate active cleansing technology to continuously prevent dirt and sludge build up.

Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 - Applications

Suitable for Jaguar, Ford diesel and Mazda diesel engines requiring specification ACEA C1 or WSS-M2C 934-B.

Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 is also known as Shell Helix diesel 5W30, Shell Diesel Ultra 5W/30, Shell AF-L 5W30 diesel engine oil, Shell synthetic oil for Mazda diesels, Shell synthetic oil for Ford diesels"

Why do ShelI have two names for the same oil (see red text above)? I realise that ACEA C1 is not on the "approved" list for my car but just wondered if this newer oil would be of any benefit?

Also, if anyone has any oils they swear by (for good reasons!) I would be interested to know. As an aside the Halfords list of cars/oils quotes 5W-30 for my car.

In our handbook, the official oil I think is Total Ineo ECS quartz 5w/30 low saps (for the particle filter) and is about £25 for 5 litres from a supplier on ebay. However, look in your maintenance book since oil recommendations change.

As far as I know, PSA proposes for its FAP engines TOTAL QUARTZ INEO ECS 5W-30 with international standards ACEA C2 and manufacturer certifications B71 2290. Watch out for Total oils NOT made in France !!! Make sure that on the label is clearly stated that they are made in Frnace.

To my euro 5 emission C3 1.6 e-hdi I use Yacco P-5w30 with same specifications (low SAPS ACEA C2 API SN/CF PSA B712290). This engine oil is suitable for Euro 4 and 5 engines.

Change is up to every 30,000 km (18,750 miles) or 1 year (depending of course your car's use). Feel free to use test them.

Thanks for the replies. I have gone for Comma 5W-40 synthetic. Firstly this is the grade specified in my handbook. Secondly a relative can get Comma oils at trade prices. We'll see how it goes.

The key thing for the DPF is that it is low ash. Comma offer this advice:-

One way to identify a Low SAPs oil is to look for an ACEA ‘C’ classification – C1, C2, C3 or C4 (It doesn’t necessarily follow that C1, is better or worst than C2, C3 or C4 – they are just different). ACEA (The European Automobile Manufacturers Association) sets standards for engine oils in Europe and its specification for Low SAPS oils begins with a ‘C’. However, most vehicle manufacturers have their own specifications for Low SAPS oils which can make the job of identifying the right oil for your vehicle quite complicated.

An easier and safer way to make sure you’re getting the right engine oil is to use Comma’s online recommendation service. By entering your vehicle registration or selecting your vehicle from the list, we’ll tell you which product you need. What’s more, we guarantee every recommendation we make. You can find the right oil for your car by using the vehicle lookup.

Just tried the lookup on my registration and it helpfully tells me the clutch fluid I need but fails to identify the car is an automatic and an exclusive so on LDS fluid.

Just tried the Comma link for our current C5 and previous one - both 2.2 hdi with a dpf but one a 2007 173 hp and the other 2004 136 hp. It did not come up with a low saps oil for the older car or mention it had the dpf, so I do not know if I would 100% trust the recommendation. No mention of LDS fluid either for these cars, so I guess it could be since they do not make it.

I noticed in the Citroen Maintenance and Warranty book that if you do not use an approved oil you should use the severe service intervals and it only mentions Total oils in the book. In a recent Car Mechanics article on oils, it said many companies do not seek approval for their oils due to the cost of testing but will say they meet car manufacturers specifications. This could be a problem with warranties.
