Thanks for that. After further investigation I've discovered the solenoid is working correctly, as is the switch behind the windscreen wiper because when pressing that, the solenoid jerks forward. The only way I can stop the screen opening as I close the driver's door is by disconnecting the solenoid. Also, if the cover at the bottom of the screen is not in place, the rear washer and wiper won't work - which may be your problem.

This idea was first written about by the late Alan Smith on the Aussie frogs site about ten years ago. He carried out the mod on a number of BX's and wrote up the job in a file that you may still find on a BX site. If I remember rightly, Alan agreed that the grease wouldn't get to the bearings, but would only fill the spacer between the inner and outer bearings, which otherwise might hold water.

Changing Fuel Filter - Xsara 2.0 Hdi
Johndouglas replied to a topic in Questions about the Citroen Xsara
You need to remove the in and out fuel lines and also the electrical connector. As you suppose, you press down the pad to release the connectors. The outer ring isn't connected to the lid. It just holds the lid in place. Use a strap wrench to move it. After changing the filter remove the rubber ring and replace with a new one. -
On the C5 estate the rear screen has a push button to open it. It works on a solenoid within the tailgate. My rear screen has started to spring open whenever the driver's door is opened or closed. At the moment I'm living in Spain and it's not easy to converse with Spanish Citroen. Does anyone know the part number of the solenoid?

All our four cars take different air filters but I'm able to get them all at a reasonable price from GSF.

Thanks Randombloke and KFK for the link. I had one of these sent just before Christmas and it didn't work, so sent it back. Presently awaiting their response.

Estate - Glass Part Of Tailgate Opens At Random
Johndouglas replied to Randombloke's topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
Thanks for that. It's a useful addition to the file. -
But in addition to a cigar lighter plug, it also needs an independent supply to power it.
-
Yes! I know all about this offer, but try and buy one and the "checkout" will then inform you that they don't ship from the US to UK.
-
Hey Randombloke - where did you get that voltmeter from? The only place I've seen them is in America and they want silly money for carriage.
-
Nothing unusual in two different sizes. On my C5, the drivers is 26"; the passenger 19". Yours should be 24" and 18" (I think)
-
I take it you're talking about the fuel lift pump in the tank. You should be able to hear it start up when you first switch on. Replacement should be around the £260 mark.
-
But why not? Not all the XUD engines carried the same crankshaft. At a glance they might look the same but the width of the main bearing journals varied.

I believe they have different crankshafts and of course one doesn't have an intercooler.

Retracting Rear Caliper Piston When Replacing Pads?
Johndouglas replied to a topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
As I said earlier, the front pistons on the C5 turn in opposite directions - offside anticlockwise; nearside clockwise. I can't see for sure but it loooks like the Sealy tool shown only turns one way. -
Retracting Rear Caliper Piston When Replacing Pads?
Johndouglas replied to a topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
Do this and you'll knacker your system for sure. The pistons on the rear brakes will just push back in. No need to open the nipples. On the front, where the handbrake is, the pistons have to be wound back. The offside wind back anticlockwise and the nearside go back clockwise. Try anything other way and they'll be damaged. -
Raise the suspension. Stand a way from the back of the car and look at the wheels. If the tops of the wheels are sloping inwards /------\ then you need to replace the arm bearings.

I'm currently living in my caravan in southern Spain - hence I don't get on the internet every day. I towed my van with my C5 down here two weeks ago. For the 650 miles through France I filled up mainly at hypermarkets with their pump diesel. Price was the equivalent of 89p per litre and my average for the 650 miles was 27mpg. Once I was over the Spanish border I found that I could buy Repsol Optima for the equivalent of 81p per litre. I decided to try it. I continued to purchase the Optima at every fillup. In spite of Spain having more long hills for towing up, at the end of the next 650 miles the Spanish average had risen to 29.3mpg. It seems that better quality fuel does give a better performance.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i53/Johndug/Dashboard.jpg The button you press is to the right of the 7 on the rev counter. Hold it in, switch on the ignition and wait for it to count down to the service interval mileage. NOTE TO GILDERDALE. Having an MOT has no effect the service interval. Change the oil and filter, put in a new fuel filter, put in a new air filter, change the cabin filter, look at the brake pads - then get rid of the spanner.

Or EGR maybe. Is there any difference when the MAF sensor is unplugged?
-
Try this for your windows. Disconnect the battery for five or ten minutes. Then reconnect. Lower every window - then raise it and hold the switch for a few seconds. This recalibrates the motors and you may find some of your other faults may be gone.

£200 for a bottom pulley? You were ripped off:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Citroen-Peugeot-Cran...A1%7C240%3A1318

Does £2000 sounds a lot for labour? The book time to remove, exchange and refit a 2ltrHDi engine is 15 hours.

I would try ebay - and just hope that a few guys might want it. Trouble is a serious caravanner wouldn't buy it because they might suspect that it had been changed because of a rear end shunt. One driver I know that had been shunted has had a bar replaced because of welding stress. No doubt the old bar will have been sold on.

Head Lamp Conversion For European Driving
Johndouglas replied to merliauds's topic in Berlingo - Technical
You would think so - but apparently not. When I advertised my 2.1 Xantia on ebay, it was an English guy who lived in France but worked in north Africa that persuaded me to pull it off ebay and let him have it. His offer price was so good! Without seeing the car, I picked him up at Heathrow, drove him to my home, gave him a coffee and the paperwork and off he went to the Dover ferry. I offered him the templates for cutting his own beam benders but he didn't want them because he was changing the headlights. But look at this. A French Xantia for £5200 on French ebay. Maybe there's your answer. http://cgi.ebay.fr/CITROEN-XANTIA-BREAK-2-...A1%7C240%3A1318
