New Clutch/gearbox After 10,000 Miles!
hertsnminds replied to Feersum_Endjin's topic in C4 - Technical
The sale of goods act says http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html Which means it is down to you to get the evidence. The best way would be an independent report from someone like the AA or RAC. Not sure how to prove you were not changing grear without pressing the clutch or doing F1 starts by revving the engine to 3k or 4k and dropping the clutch or abusing the car in some other way. The only evidence you have is all the previous cars you have owned. The other evidence Citroen have is at the pre sale check and the 1,000 mile inspection the car was OK (I am assuming this was the case). Did the clutch bite point change during the 10k miles you have been driving, have you reported any faults with the car during the time you have had it? If not it sounds like the car has been doing its job (under the sale of goods act). The only other thing I can think that you can check, and this will be difficult to find out, is how many other 1.6 VTR+ cars have had a clutch fail at 10k to maybe show there was a faulty batch of parts at the time your car was manufactured. Sorry not to be of more help Ian Black 55 VTR+ -
02 reg = 5 years = 1825 days Car used twice a day = 4 activations = 7,300 activations Car used 4 times a day = 8 activations = 14,600 activations All of the above aside, if you pour water onto most electrics no matter how old they are they will fail. I have had similar problems with a BX ABS system where it wasn't the first part that got replaced that solved the problem. It is a shame they can't try a part to see if it works before charging you for it and then move on to the next part in the chain to fix a fault. Ian Black 55 VTR+

I have never driven 2 cars of the same make/model that have the same clutch bite point. This is because no 2 cars will have the same wear on the the clutch and clutch cable. It is possible to adjust the bite point on any car by getting the clutch cable adjusted. Ian Black 55 VTR+

An AX service and a C4 service are I suspect very different beasts. The main difference being all of the computers involved in the C4, engine management, ABS, all the controls for the electrics etc etc. Yes you still have the physical things to change spark plugs, filters etc, but that is just half the story. Just seen this the AutoTrader website Price on the Citroen website... C6 2.7HDi V6 208hp Lignage Auto £34,995 A car that is 6 months old with 4,500 miles on the clock has depreciatied by £9,245 (£1,540 per month or £2 per mile). What Car says the part ex is £20,665 a drop of £14.330 (41%) Scary stuff, but a bargain used car. Ian Black 55 VTR+

Just wanted to point out that the cheapest place to buy the blades, reading this thread, still seems to be a Citroen dealer where they charged me £29.53 inc VAT. Even if you take into account to get that price I spent £37.41 to get all 3 blades. Maybe you guys need a holiday up here in sunny Scotland to save a few pounds on your wiper blades  Ian Black 55 VTR+

How often do you check the tyre pressure? Does it only pull to the left on roads with the same type of camber? If it is not pulling to the left on a flat road then it may be nothing to worry about. The car does change quite a bit in the first 10,000 miles as things loosen up. I think it just gets better as the miles go up. Ian Black 55 VTR+

Not sure about a physical way to check but the V5 document should list CO2 emissions. With the C4 the 90 and 110 models have different emissions 128 g/Km and 125 g/Km respectively. Ian Black 55 VTR+

What Car website says this... Citroën Berlingo Multispace MPV (02-) 1.4i Forte 5dr 2005 (05)21,000 miles Dealer £5,900 Private £5,385 Part exchange £4,905 Trade £4,695 Cost new £10,115 Ian Black 55 VTR+

I had all 3 blades replaced at the 25k service 2 weeks ago and the Citroen dealer gave me a 25% discount as I bought all 3 blades. They charged me £29.53 for the front set and £7.88 for the rear blade. Ian Black 55 VTR+

On Fiat airbag/tensioner systems it used to be the case that if you disconnected the plugs under the seats and plugged them back in again while the battery was still connected you had to have the system reset with the Fiat diagnostic computer as it thought there had been a system activation which required a dealer intervention i.e new airbag or tensioner detination system. Make sure your insurance covers you for mainland Europe and have the cover note with you. You also have to carry certain things by law, first aid kit, spare bulbs, fire extinguisher. Different rules for different countries. Also check for different traffic rules. In the Netherlands you give way to traffic entering a roundabout NOT traffic already on the roundabout. If you plan to drive into any part of Switzerland you have to buy 1 years road tax even if you are only there for an hour or so. Ian Black 55 VTR+

Just an update on this to confirm that the Shell diesel is giving me at least 50 more miles per tank and as the prices are the same as the supermarkets near me I will stick with the Shell branded. Noticed that unleaded has crept up to the same price as diesel and in some places even costs more per litre at the moment. Ian Black 55 VTR+

Easiest way to check if your car is different from other C4 is to find a dealer with the same model on their forecourt and ask for a test drive. Failing that, organising an owners meeting is a good way to look and listen to other C4 and get tips on how other owners have sorted out issues they have had. Ian Black 55 VTR+

Let's give Citroen a bit more credit for innovation. The Hiab (extra cost accessory) is for removing/replacing the rear 2 seats section of the car so that it is true 2 seater soft top when the roof is off and a proper 4 seater hatch when the roof (rear section) is on. :P Ian Black 55 VTR+

If the dealer has quoted for a new box can we assume they have checked everything else it could be? The switch itself, the wiring, any fuses in the chain, etc, etc Ian Black 55 VTR+

Maybe Citroen are just going to base all of their production on the C4 platform, watch out the C4 Pluriel could be next :P Ian Black 55 VTR+

The C4 speedo is much more acurate than most. Always matches the display on my GPS unless I am doing under 10MPH, then it seems to be out by 1 or 2 MPH. Ian Black 55 VTR+

You need to read the post titled "Pluriel Leaking Roof" in this section of the forum. Ian Black 55 VTR+

I hope your Corsa wasn't called Christine, the 1984 John Carpenter film of the same name might explain some of the issues you were having. Ian Black 55 VTR+

I have used Goodyear NCT5's on a previous car and found they were quite good blackcircles.com are quoting them at £84.54 each (fitted). The budget tyres they have start at around £46. I would also get these guys to give you a quote http://www.protyrefareham.co.uk/index.html I know they are only based in the South but they may be able to give you a quote that someone else will price match. and the answer to that question on the insurance application will be interesting to read. Ian Black 55 VTR+

I agree and I was just taking your point to the extreme. In all the cars I owned before my C4 I was able to turn the lights on when it got dark and the wipers on when the screen needed cleaning. I could even keep to the speed limits and cruise on motorways without the car doing it for me. The same is true of other things like phones. It used to be a phone was something you used to talk to someone else. Now with a phone you can take still and moving pictures, play back music, watch TV, listen to the radio, surf the internet, use it as a diary or calculator, play games, use it as a remote control mouse for your computer and many other things that you would never expect a phone to do. To some extent the manufacturers are forced to add things for legeslative reasons, ABS, 3rd brake light, airbags and even things like the sensodrive and egs systems which are partly there to reduce emissions and put the cars in lower tax bands. A lot of the gadets are there because that's what the competition is offering. I think with the new Astra advert showing a larger windscreen GM are jumping on the Picasso visiospace bandwagon. Just becasue you can do something doesn't always make it useful and very rarely is it neccessary. Ian Black 55 VTR+

Hello Mike When I had this problem with my Pluriel the solution was to order a new rear screen cassette. This was all done under warranty so I have no idea of the costs. I never found out if this solved the problem as I traded my Pluriel in for a C4 before the part came in (it took 2 - 3 weeks and I had had enough of carrying a bucket in the boot to catch the water). For information about the Pluriel and some of the changes look at this website http://www.c3pluriel.org.uk/ Look in the Questions section under, why is my Pluriel wet inside. Ian Black 55 VTR+

You could take this argument to the extreme asking the following... How often do you have more than 1 person in the car? How often do you carry large amounts of shopping/luggage? Why not just buy a moped, less tax, fuel, insurance and servicing costs. A lot of the electric functions are software based, like switching the rear wiper on when you select reverse and speed sensitive wipers so adding or removing them does not cost much (assuming the software is already available for other models). Removing airbags would probably lower the NCAP rating and increase the insurance group. There are many lesser vehicles out there, if you want to buy a stripped down cheaper one. If you want to save some cash and get a C3 have a look on autotrader. 2 year old C3 with around 10k on the clock start from £4,000 and you still get all the toys. Ian Black 55 VTR+
