How Economical A Citroen C4 1.6Hdi 2006? Share Your Expereince
paul.h replied to arak81's topic in C4 - General
If you want to improve your mpg then you will need to not drive in towns and if possible drive when the roads are not busy, do not race between traffic lights, drive smoothly, lift your foot off the accelerator as soon as you realise you are going to slow down, drive in as high a gear as possible (for a diesel it should be ok to change up a gear at about 1500 to 2000 rpm whereas a petrol will need higher rpm). The stopping/starting/using low gears in a town prevents getting a decent mpg. The official mpg will be in your handbook but from a 2005 C4 brochure for the 1.6 hdi 110 bhp engine with a 5 speed manual gearbox but no dpf gives : 47.1 / 70.6 / 60.1 mpg urban/extra urban/combined. Our 2008 C4 with this engine and without a dpf, gave about 52 mpg average but most of the mileage was motorway and it was the town bits that knocked the economy down to this from high 50s on the motorway. -
New Front Brakes But Just Had A Frightening Experience
paul.h replied to RichCliff's topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
It hurts to suggest this, but I would be tempted to go back to ATS under the guarantee since it is possible they did not do the disc replacement properly and ensure the disc run out was within tolerance, or maybe they used cheap parts. Whilst it may have been ok to start with, after some time the discs would wear unevenly and give the problems you now have. I would not think you caused the problem when they failed since if that had warped the discs it would have been noticed straight away - in any case I would not even mention this since it is not likely to be relevant but they might use it as an excuse. It is also possible the rear brakes could cause the steering wheel to wobble - I had this on a Maxi many years ago and it was a rear brake drum that had worn badly. The noise when turning might be the brakes. -
Driving C4 Plus 1.6Hdi In The Rain Is Very Annoying
paul.h replied to arak81's topic in C4 - General
You may find a Citroen dealer will cost similar to a fast fit place. Last year I had our C5 recharged at my local dealer and it was £50. Beware that a fast fit place may advise that your brakes, shock absorbers and maybe tyres need replacing. To properly check the drain probably needs the carpet and trim removing in the driver's footwell and the drain hose removing and checking it is clear as well as the drain hose connection, so I would not expect it to be checked unless you ask for it as additional work (and cost). However, if it is not blocked, once the air con is working you should see water dripping out of the drain on to the floor under the driver's footwell area. -
The easiest way to check will be to measure the radio in your car. I would get the seller to confirm it will work in your car and not have any affect on exising systems on your car. You may find the steering wheel audio controls may not work and the car may come up with error messages since it will be looking for the original radio. You will likely need adaptor leads to fit the existing wiring in the car.
-
Why not just measure a wheel and save the effort of removing one ? What engine does your car have ? What size wheels and tyres do you have now - if you have 16inch then the spare steel wheel is 16 inch and tyre 225/60R16 98V or 215/60R16 95V for 1.6 hdi, if you have 17 or 18 or 19 inch wheels then the steel spare is 17 inch and tyre 225/55R17 97W.
-
Is your car a 1.6 hdi or a 2.7 hdi ? I have a C5 brochure for January 2009 and in it a steel spare wheel is standard apart from the 1.6 hdi and the 2.7 hdi where it is an option. So you will be able to fit a spare wheel since the body work on the 1.6 hdi is still the same as the other models.

Getting A Part Number From Citroen
paul.h replied to humptyw's topic in Questions about Citroen the Company
Will a part from outside the UK be for a left hand drive car ? I do not know about the comms unit (or its air bag if that is the problem) but this may be relevant for some parts. -
I have looked in a 2006 to 2008 C4 handbook and on page 90 it has a section on child safety and this is different to my previous posts and seems to be what you are looking for. I have now edited my posts above. It says the rear door locks can be manually locked using the lever - the picture shows it is the one down the edge of the door near the lock and is usually covered by a round sticker. Use a key or screwdriver in the aperture to turn it so it is horizontal. It says the rear door symbol lights up on the dash with the ignition on if the manual lever is used. If using this method you might have to do it every time you close the door but I am not certain since I have never used this on any of our cars. It also mentions using the driver's door window switch to stop the rear window switches working and the rear doors opening from the inside - so it looks as if your switch is not working properly. You say when you try it you hear the locks locking but then bouncing back unlocked straight away - when using central locking this is a sign if one of the doors is not closed. Is your central locking working ? With the ignition on does your dash indicate if the doors are open and if so are any of the rear doors being shown as open when they are closed ?

From above post 5, for the abs ecu for the mark 2 C5: the parts diagrams lists 2 - 4542F0 and 4542F1 with the first listed as part to be configured and the second as a configured part to the VIN. So provided the part comes from a mark 2 C5 it should be the same as on your car. We need somebody with a Lexia to tell us if a used part still needs to be configured.

The micro switches that tell the car a door is open are often built in to the locks. So it could be the door lock needs replacing. You could check its electrical connector is ok, the pins are clean and the wiring is ok (a common failure on Citroens is where the wiring goes between the door and body and is often hidden inside a plastic pipe so is not at first obvious). Also try working it manually with a screwdriver to close the latch and see if it shows anything on the warning message when the lock/latch is moved about. If you can work out which wires are for the micro switch in the lock you could try to bypass the switch so that you can lock the car until you get a new part or manage to fix it. This is from the C5 Common Problems pinned topic: 32. C5 (X7) tourer high level brake light not working / boot lock switch not working / damaged rear wiring. There have been 2 recent reports of the brake light failure caused by the wiring between the body and tailgate breaking at the top of the tailgate. The high level brake light wires are in a separate duct to the other wires. This should be checked before attempting to remove the light. In one case the boot switch would not unlock the boot, it turned out a wire was damaged under the dash. See this topic from robskiing http://www.citroen-o...2861-boot-lock/ . Unfortunately he also had the steering rack seal fail.

C8 Seatbelt Tensioner Or Airbag Fault Warning
paul.h replied to humptyw's topic in Technical Section - C8
If it is an air bag igniter fault then surely the air bag needs replacing and not the comms 2000 unit with the wiper/lighting stalks, unless it is a problem with the wiring or rotary switch in the comms unit ? There is a long list of part nos. for the comms unit depending on what features the car has but I would send a message to coastline taxis about this since I am sure he has previously said it does not really matter. When the comms unit is replaced the rotary switch needs turning so that 3 triangles line up before fitting it. The steering wheel air bag part nos. are 4112HQ up to RPO 11192 4112LP for RPO 11193 to 11374 except Range Activity 4112NR from RPO 11291 for Range Activity -
There are just the 2 part numbers noted above for the mark 2 C5 2004 to 2008 but the mark 1 C5 2001 to 2004 is completely different. The mark 3 C5 is also different. On ebay they seem to come complete with the abs pump but the prices vary widely.

When Citroen supply cars without a spare wheel such as the C4, they also do not provide the jack, the jack handle if separate to the jack, the wheel nut brace, the tool to remove the wheel nut covers, the tray in which these all sit and a plastic nut to hold the tray to the floor. When we bought a 2011 C4 I had to buy all these but when that car was replaced I transferred them to the same model replacement car and put back the sealant, air compressor and expanded plastic boot insert in which these sit. Both our C5s came with full size steel spare wheels 2004 and a 2007 car and looking at brochures for the later mark 3 C5 they do not mention having sealant instead of a spare wheel (Citroen normally include this information) so it could be the car you are looking at has had the spare wheel removed.

I repeat, it is not possible to stop the doors being opened from the inside unless you dead lock the doors. This is done by 2 pushes on the key remote lock button and also from the outside by 2 turns of the key in the lock. If you do this though, the only way to open any of the doors is to use the remote unlock button or the key in the door lock and if for some reason somebody wanting to open a door from the inside could not get to the remote key (or it developed a fault) they would need to open or break a window and climb out of the window. Years ago cars used to have a button at the top of the door card that would be pushed down to lock a door or pulled up to unlock it but these are no longer used. I do not know how many people you normally have in the back of your car, but have you considered using the child/baby seat fastened in the middle of the rear seat rather than at one side - then the child would not be able to reach the doors. To disable a window switch you could try pulling the switch out of the door card and then unplugging its electrical connector but tie it up so it can not drop inside the door. See post 9, it should be possible to disable the rear doors and windows.

Getting A Part Number From Citroen
paul.h replied to humptyw's topic in Questions about Citroen the Company
One thing you will find, part numbers stamped on parts are normally the manufacturer's number and not Citroen's or Peugeot's part number. If you look on ebay it is best to search with the Citroen part no. but some sellers use the manufacturer's no. What part do you need ? -
2003 2.8 Hdi With 323,000 Miles On The Clock
paul.h replied to Sneyolg 30's topic in Relay - Technical
Welcome to the forum. You will need to have a diagnostic check to see what the cause is, anything else would be a list of guesses and then you could replace many parts before getting to the faulty one. Normal servicing items to check though are when the fuel filter was last replaced and if the air filter needs replacing. -
Driving C4 Plus 1.6Hdi In The Rain Is Very Annoying
paul.h replied to arak81's topic in C4 - General
Also make sure the air flow is not set to recycle so that outside air comes in to the car and have the heater set so the air is warmed up since this will reduce the humidity of the air so it can absorb more moisture from the windscreen. You may need to check the air con drain is not blocked and filling up with water. Despite all these things, I used to find our 2008 C4 was prone to steaming up when it rained so would need to use the air con. -
The door locks can only be locked against opening from the inside by deadlocking them. Having the locks auto locking when above 6 mph only prevents them from being opened from the outside. You would not want the doors to be unopenable from the inside when you are in the car and part of the MOT test is to make sure the doors open from the inside. From memory, the driver's door switch has a switch at the back that is in an up or a down position - in one of these positions it should deactivate the rear door mounted electric window switches. If this is not working then maybe there is a fault with the switch or its wiring or connector. Edited, see post 9, it should be possible to disable the rear door locks and windows.

2004,54 plate, 2.0 hdi from previous posts. From Citroen's procedure, the abs ecu can be replaced without having to undo the brake pipes on the valve block, just move it away from the bracket and it does not mention having to initialise it with a diagnostic. To get to it though it says the engine fusebox needs removing. However, the parts diagrams lists 2 - 4542F0 and 4542F1 with the first listed as part to be configured and the second as a configured part to the VIN so I suspect it will need to be put on a computer. On a previous C4 we had the abs pump replaced and that had to be connected up for a diagnostic.

Looking through the procedures for an older C1 than yours, it says the clutch pedal should be 135 to 145 mm above the floor, measured at right angles to the angled floor below the pedal and to the top of the middle of the pedal rubber. Since the clutch is cable operated, if it is not at this height then it can be adjusted using a screw and locknut near the top of the pedal. Then if the pedal is pushed down, there should be 18 to 28 mm before any resistance is felt - if this is not correct then the cable can be adjusted at the gearbox end.

Welcome to the forum. Engine and gearbox oils have a different smell and usually engine oil goes black whereas gearbox oil normally stays a golden colour. You can check the smell against a bit off the engine dipstick. Also check the brake fluid level is not going down since if the clutch is operated hydraulically it will take the supply from the brake fluid reservoir. If the oil is dripping out of the bellhousing and it is black, it is most likely engine oil leaking passed the crankshaft oil seal - was this seal replaced when the clutch was replaced which would have needed the flywheel to be removed ? If it was not touched then it would not normally then start to leak, but if it was replaced then maybe it was damaged or is not properly in place or maybe it was not greased/oiled before fitting so that it wore out as soon as the engine was used. Seals on the gearbox are not often replaced when doing a clutch unless they were leaking but Citroen's procedures say if there is oil on the clutch, as well as the crankshaft seal, the clutch thrust bearing guide should be replaced. Whatever the cause of the oil leak it will need fixing, otherwise the oil could get on the clutch and it would need replacing again as it is then likely to judder when letting the clutch pedal up.

Welcome to the forum. I can not help with your radio though. Whilst on the site have a look at the C5 section, particularly the Technical section Common Problems pinned topic which may help you with any potential problems on your C5.

Welcome to the forum. Check the steering fluid level to see if it is ok. If the level is low your Citroen dealer will sell the correct fluid but could be Total DA fluid or if your car has hydraulic suspension will be Total LDS fluid from the suspension fluid tank. You could also turn the steering from lock to lock with the engine running to bleed out any air in it. If this does not help then I would go back to the dealer. You might be able to see the steering rack input shaft from above with the bonnet open or from under the car. The bung is likely the rubber seal around the column shaft at floor level in the car.

Thanks for getting back to us and I am pleased your car is now ok.

On here P1340 is listed as P1340 Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Malfunction So this might be a faulty exhaust camshaft sensor or its wiring. We had this on our C3, it still ran in limp mode with the engine management light on. This is from the C3 Common Problems topic: 25. Camshaft position sensor failure - 2010 C3, 1.4 VTI petrol. This happened on our C3, 15k miles. The engine management light came on, anti pollution message, went in to limp mode so the performance was poor. Fault codes were read as P0341, 0342, 0343 camshaft position sensor A bank 1 or single sensor range, low, high. Both the inlet and exhaust sensors were replaced as I thought if one has failed the other may not be too far behind. On checking, the inlet one gave a resistance measurement between all of the 3 pins and the new and exhaust only did on 2 pins. £47 for 2 sensors, they come with new O-ring seals.
