Cutting out when hot but once cooled down then being ok could be a sign of a crankshaft sensor failing and these may not give a fault code. Only running for a few seconds may be a fuel fault so possibly low fuel pressure, maybe a pressure sensor or high pressure fuel pump fault. On a diagnostic you could check the fuel pressure. Also see if there is a fuel filter and if it has been replaced.

The mark 1 C5 2.0 hdi 110 bhp hatchback official fuel figures are 38.2/61.4/50.4 mpg urban/extra urban/combined from a 2003 sales brochure. I would have expected you to get about 50 mpg unless you are doing mostly round town driving, I used to get about that from a 2.2 hdi hatchback but by keeping just below about 70 mph on motorways and its official figures are 32.5/58.9/44.8 mpg. So by your style of driving you may be using about 20% more fuel, and at 25k miles a year that is equivalent to 5000 miles a year, around £600 a year. So maybe you are working an extra week or so a year to pay for the fuel so you can drive quickly. Something to think about. You could try different driving styles resetting the trip computer each day (hold in the button on the end of the wiper stalk), one day your usual style, another day driving smoothly with no hard accelerating/braking, leaving a good gap so you do not need to brake much, lifting off the accelerator sooner when slowing down, keeping your speed down, do not accelerate up hills too much. As well as the fuel cost savings, unless you are late for something it is often less stressful for you and others on the road if you do not drive fast. You need to check if the timing belt has been replaced yet, should be done at 10 years if it has not reached the mileage limit. Also replace the water pump and tensioner at the same time.

2004 Mk1 C5 Estate Can You Retro Fit Roof Rails
paul.h replied to octo0072000's topic in Questions about the Citroen C5
The roof panel has only one part number so you should be able to fit the rails. Each rail is held by 3 screws in to the roof so if you remove one of the plastic covers you should see a captive nut. The middle screw on the rail goes in to a spacer that is first fastened to the roof. -
Welcome to the forum. According to the Haynes manual for the C5, the air pump is located at the front right hand corner of the engine and the air filter housing has to be removed to get to it. Here is an example of a secondary air pump to give you an idea of what to look for http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Citroen-C4-C5-XSARA-1-8-2-0-2-2-Petrol-Secondary-Air-Pump-1618E4-9653340580-/230862484588

Looking at the parts diagrams, the cap for the bleed pipe does not seem to be listed separate to the hose but if you visit your Citroen dealer they may be able to sell the cap on its own.

Citroen C8 2.2 Hdi Engine Management Light On Motorway
paul.h replied to stevestoys's topic in Technical Section - C8
Could be the exhaust dpf since the extra revs and exhaust gases would result in a higher pressure in the filter. Maybe keep the revs down if possible until you can fix it. However, anything that affects the emissions becoming faulty will put on the engine management light so you need to read the fault code before spending any money. -
Citroen C4 2011 (Model With Original Touch Screen) Usb Port Question
paul.h replied to mif987's topic in C4 - General
If it does have a usb port the handbook will show you where it is, possibly under the radio in front of the gear lever or if like the C3, next to the gear lever. -
Hitter plug relay - do you mean heater plug relay and therefore refering to the glow plugs ? You seem to be a bit unlucky having a 2006 C4 with an exhaust particle filter (dpf). We had a 2008 C4 1.6 hdi 110 bhp that did not have a dpf so ones with a dpf may not have been common.

Rear Wiper Doesnt Come On When Car Is In Reverse Gear C4 Plus 1.6 Hdi
paul.h replied to arak81's topic in C4 - Technical
In the radio menu is the rear wiper set to work when selecting reverse (this is different to front auto wipers which applies when it rains if you have the rain sensor at the top middle of the windscreen) ? If yes then do the reversing lights work to show that the reverse gear switch is working ? When it does work in reverse it is only an intermittent wipe and not continuous one. -
Looking at the parts diagrams some 1.6 hdi engines have a dual mass flywheel and some do not. There are also different release bearings used. The only way to check your car without taking it apart is to use your car VIN (VIS) in the parts diagrams. You can do this at a dealer or on-line as a free service on the service.citroen site if you register as another professional and a member of the Citroen Owners Club http://service.citroen.com/do/changerParametres .The flywheel appears under Engine, Crankshaft and the clutch under Gearbox Assembly, Clutch.

Welcome to the forum. In this topic, what has apppeared to be leaking O-ring seals has actually been the input shaft seal leaking and a replacement rack has been needed. So if not already done, clean up all the oil from the rack and then see if the input shaft seal is the problem.

The biting point on the pedal may possibly have changed if the clutch master/slave cylinders have been bled and there was some air in them. If the battery voltage is down this may prevent the stop/start working - possibly due to the car not being used for a while. You could check its voltage, should be about 12.5 volts before running the engine.

Welcome to the forum. With the recent news on VW diesels and emission testing it is highlighting that in practice you will not get the official mpg values in real life. This probably applies to most recent cars where the official values are generated in lab conditions, possibly with mods to help aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, never mind VWs software. However, it may allow you to compare one car against another to see which may use less fuel. With your driving as listed you should expect to get decent fuel economy provided you drive smoothly (no fast get aways/stops), not too many hills, keep your speed down - doing 75 mph may use 5 to 10% more fuel than 65 mph. We have a C4 115 bhp 1.6 hdi with a 6 speed manual gearbox and the official figures are 64/83/74 mpg urban/extra urban/combined. Its use may on average be similar to yours and on long motorway runs does about 67 mpg but has averaged about 61 mpg over the last 7000 miles according to the trip computer. There is also a C3 2010 1.4 vti 95 bhp petrol with 5 speed gearbox in the family which according to the trip computer seems to average about 38 mpg on mostly short trips but if I do a long motorway trip with a town bit at the end it is about 48 mpg - the official figures are 36.7/57.6/47.9 mpg - so it seems to be doing similar to the official figures apart from the extra urban value. So if these comparisons help, you may expect around 70 mpg. The town driving is usually the bit that dramatically increases fuel use and a car with stop/start may help this but I suspect at possibly higher maintenance costs in the life of the car. The auto egs models also seem to have good fuel economy but this could be at the expense of higher maintenance costs. So if buying an older car the maintenance costs need to be considered since these can be much higher than fuel savings. When looking at cars you could look at the trip computer values but it could be biased if the car has been doing a lot of short trips such as being moved around by a dealer. With the engine running, push the button on the end of the wiper stalk a few times and it will go through the various computer pages - one will be the trip average mpg since the last reset of that page (done by holding in the button), one will be the current mpg over a short distance, the other will be miles left in the fuel tank at the current mpg.

C5 Radio Not Working
paul.h replied to Poker Andrew's topic in I.C.E (In Car Entertainment) Discussion
Some radios have a fuse inside so it may be worthwhile having a look. -
The timing belt replacement interval on the 1.4 petrol engine is every 10 years or 80k miles if sooner for Citroen parts, so unless the car was on a high mileage when you bought it I would think the belt has not been changed. If you look in the Warranty and Maintenace book with the service stamps it will be noted if the belt was replaced. This book also gives the service intervals. If the servicing has been done at a Citroen dealer the service records will be on their computer system so can be checked. If the 8 valve engine (75 bhp) you can remove the belt top plastic cover by removing 2 bolts and then inspect the belt for condition, only takes a few minutes. I used to do this every year on our previous C3. When I did replace it I also replaced the water pump, the tensioner, the auxiliary belt and its pulleys, the anti freeze, thermostat, all with parts from Citroen and was about £300. It took me a day but a garage used to working on the car would not take that long. Since the car is now 10 years old, the first garage would have been possibly negligent if they had not mentioned the timing belt being due for replacement, it then being up to you to check your records to confirm this and then deciding if you replace it. If you are going to keep the car for some time and the belt has not yet been done then I would budget for doing it soon. If you do not do the aux belt and pulleys, as a minimum replace the water pump, tensioner, timing belt and anti freeze.

Switches For Aircon, Recirculation And Rear Demister Not Lighting.
paul.h replied to pjs's topic in C3 - Technical
Welcome to the forum. Possibly the electrical connector at the back of the switch panel is not connected. -
A google search came up with a few things to look at http://engine-codes.com/p2178.html before replacing the fuel pump which is likely to be expensive. Use live data on your code reader to check the lambda sensors - the inlet one should switch frequently about 1.0 and the outlet one should stay constant unless the catalyst is faulty and the nit would mirror the inlet one.

Parking Sensors With Towbar Problem
paul.h replied to hannah_gleeson's topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
The middle parking sensors on our C5 estate sometimes see the towbar. The towball is bolted to the towbar. Adjusting the position of the 13 pin wiring socket helped but it seems sensitive to the position of the towball cover and slight adjustments of its position can get it out of line of the sensors. -
1. Possibly there is a switch fault such as it needs cleaning internally or replacing or depending on what the symptoms are, there is a wiring fault such as where it goes between the door and body. 2. If you look at the back bumper can you see the parking sensors - we had a 2008 C4 1.6 hdi vtr+ and that did not have parking sensors. 3. The auto indexing of the kerb side door mirror when selecting reverse will only be fitted if you have the parking sensor option when the car was made. For it to work, the driver's door mirror selection switch has to be in the position for the passenger door mirror. 4. Auto head lights usually means they will automatically come on when it gets dark. If your car has this the light switch may need to be left in a set position and possibly it may need to be activated via the radio menu or holding in the button on the end of the light stalk (as on the C5). It will also need the light sensor at the top middle of the windscreen. The height of the lights is set manually using the rotary switch at the right side of the dash. 4. Audio upgrade - ask somewhere like Halfords but make sure they confirm it will not affect other features of the car such as the steering wheel switches. 5. Engine shaking when it is switched off - if this occurs each time then it may be a sign there is something wrong such as the dual mass flywheel is worn. worn engine mountings, etc. 6. Climate control should not work without the engine running. If you mean just the cabin fan, then this might run if the ignition switch is turned so the dash lights up unless the car is in eco mode (without the engine running, some things will not work after approx 15 minutes to stop the battery going flat - includes internal lights, the radio)

There is a Haynes manual for the C4 that may be worth buying to help you understand what should be done when repairing your car. You could also look at the parts diagrams on the service.citroen site if you register as another professional and a member of the Citroen Owners Club http://service.citroen.com/do/changerParametres In the parts diagrams use your VIN (VIS) top left to find your car. The sump does not have a gasket and relies on sealant, so maybe the old sealant was not removed/replaced properly. However, to replace the head gasket would not normally need the sump removing, so unless you asked them to do this it may not have been removed and a previous leak from here would have remained. Similarly the oil filter housing would not be removed unless you mean just the oil filter plastic cover which is removed when the filter is replaced. Here the rubber seal is renewed when the filter is changed. Where did the coolant leak out ? There are some changes to consumer rights starting 1/10/2015 which seem to give service and goods providers one chance to get something right but whether this would apply to something before then I do not know.

Haynes Do Not Do A Workshop Manual For Relay Van
paul.h replied to thesuperfitter's topic in New Member Introduction
The Citroen service box manuals are worth buying from such as ebay. These have the workshop procedures, parts diagrams and wiring diagrams and come on 3 dvds to install on a pc. -

Sometimes the manuals are left in a drawer under a seat. You can also get the manuals from here but you may need to do it in sections. Just select your language first and then your car and its year http://service.citroen.com/ddb/
