Rear Brakes - Do Not Be Afraid! Disc Replacement
paul.h replied to PICASSOCONVERT's topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
The 2.2 hdi has larger front discs than the other engines. - front discs diameter 288 mm, thickness new 28 mm, min 26 mm. Brake pad friction material 12 mm new, min 2.5 mm. Disc max runout 0.05 mm. Caliper bolt 120 Nm, caliper pivot bolt 30 Nm. Disc screw 10 Nm. Left piston rotate clockwise to wind in, right one anti clockwise (I prefer with the bleed nipple open to release the fluid). Pump the brake pedal to push the pads against the disc before fitting the handbrake cable back. The plastic guide for the pad wear cable at the bottom of the caliper is brittle but has 2 lugs to push in before it will pull out of the caliper. - rear discs diameter 276 mm, thickness new 14 mm, min 12 mm. Pad friction material 12 mm new, min 3 mm (I have found due to the shims only covering half the pad back plates, the pads wear slightly thinner at one edge). Disc max runout 0.05 mm. Caliper bolt 16 mm AF, 70 Nm, pad cover bolt 3.5 Nm (so do not do too tight). Disc screw 10 Nm (if seized, an impact driver may help, or if new ones are available knock round with a chisel). -
Thankyou for posting, if you do any other maintenance on your C3 you will find it is one of the easiest cars to maintain. Just for info, if anyone can get a torque wrench in place, the oil filter cover should be done up to 25 Nm with a smear of oil on the cover O-ring seal..

Welcome to the forum. We also have a forum dedicated to the Picasso and there is a link to it from the home page.

See also this post where a 2010 C3 Picasso driver's door was not locking/unlocking from the remote and using the key in the lock hole in the side of the door provided the fix http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/20681-odd-central-locking-problem/

Thankyou for the feedback, it is always nice when a fix costs nothing. I have put a link to this post on the pinned note on central locking problems and included the fix in the common problems post.

The alarm also drains the battery and towbar relays. If our C5 is not used for more than 3 weeks then the battery can be too low to start it. The towbar fuses are removed if not towing which gives another week before the battery will be too low. Our previous C5 was the same.

As well as the Haynes ones you can get the Citroen ones on dvd from such as ebay for £4. These include wiring diagrams and the parts diagrams. You can also see the parts on the service.citroen website if you register as another professional, member of the Citroen Owners Club.

Problem - Seatbelt Audible Reminder Stopped Working
paul.h replied to burnhole's topic in Technical Section - C8
We have a caravan so I have fitted towbars to some of our cars using wiring kits for the 12N and 12S and 13 pin sockets with by-pass relays. The 12 volt supplies were taken from the batteries with fuses at the battery end of the wiring, 15 amp (blue) for the lighting relay and 20 amp (yellow) for the caravan supply relay. So, as a first I would look at the battery (under driver's footwell ?) for any fuses and the 12 volt positive supply wiring. If you only have the 12N lighting socket, it is possible it may have been wired without a relay, direct from the rear lights so would not have a battery supply and fuse - you would have to look in the boot area for where the towbar cable ends to see it it goes to a relay or direct to the rear lights. On the MOT, the MOT testers manual is available on-line on one of the direct.gov sites. I have a 1/2012 copy and under section 1.4 for indicators and hazards there must be a working 'tell tale' which may be audible or visual - so if you have a flashing light that shows the indicators are working then you may not need the beeper as well. Just had a listen to our C4 and the beeps come from the comms 2000 unit below the steering wheel. Tried with the hazards on, then put the lights on and opened the driver's door. The beeping from the hazards stopped to be replaced by the lights on beep so they are probably using the same beeper. Depending on the towbar fuse checks, it may be you need to replace the comms unit - however, if the audible warning of the indicators is not part of the MOT you could do nothing for now. -
The clicking noise may be the bsi waking up. When the engine is turned off and the key removed, if nothing is done the bsi shuts down after a few minutes. Then if something such as a door is opened it will wake up and start to do things ready for starting the car. I notice it on our C5 when you first get in it, the speedo and rev counter needles move to the zero point and then there are clicking noises from inside the dash which I suspect to be part of the heating. There is also a sat nav hard drive on ours that sounds as if it starts spinning and I am sure that all these things starting in case the car is going to be used only help to drain the battery if the doors are opened a lot.

Welcome to the forum. According to the Haynes manual the gear change cables can be adjusted so maybe this may help. Our C5 expert is coastline taxis so he may also provide some advice.

The handbook can be seen for cars from about 2008 on the service.citroen website, documentation de bord, select language and then your car http://service.citroen.com/ddb/. These only give a 1.6 hdi so I guess your car is earlier than this. Dealers seem to be able to supply new handbooks and a member recently bought one for a C5 and at a price below s/h ebay ones. The Citroen roof bars that go across our 2007 C5 estate fasten with a torx key. This is held in the end of the bars behind a key locked cover that pulls out (I cannot find this key so do not know the torx size). If the dash gauge needle moves when the ignition is on then it is most likely the fuel tank gauge is at fault. The fuel gauge may be worn out and need replacing but you could check if its electrical connector is on and clean. On most cars access to the gauge is under the rear seat by removing a rubber cover but in your case you may have to lower the fuel tank to do this which could mean draining it first. It is also possible the gauge float may be catching the tank side. A 2.0 hdi C5 estate fuel consumption from a 2005 brochure is 36/56/47 mpg urban/extra urban/combined (CO2 158 g/km) so you are probably going to get something similar. If you have the V5C registration doc that will give the CO2 emissions and an indication of fuel consumption. Best thing may be to fill the tank, use it for some time then refill and calculate an actual fuel consumption. If you run out of fuel there is a risk of damage to the fuel pumps but in any case the filter would need priming and there is likely a hand bulb pump near the filter. If there is not a pump, then just start the engine and it should self prime.

Problem - Seatbelt Audible Reminder Stopped Working
paul.h replied to burnhole's topic in Technical Section - C8
I hoped that with the extra info somebody may have come up with a few ideas. Does the buzzer sound if you leave the key in the car or if you leave the lights on and have you tried with the towbar fuses removed in case this is having an effect ? Was the towbar wired up using a dedicated Citroen kit or an ordinary wiring kit with by-pass relays ? I have been unable to find any info on the warning buzzer location but at a guess it may be built in to the bsi cabin fuse box and if it is faulty, as a guess, it may need a bsi repair. -
Just a reminder to use axle stands if you go under the car. If you catch one of the height adjusters (which are not that far from the exhaust) the car can drop to a very low level. If you are going to remove the DPF (or knock it through/drill a big hole through it), you will also need the ecu software modifying to remove references to the DPF system. I think I read on here somebody had washed their filter and reused it so could be worth checking as another option.

Drivers Inside Door Handle Snapped
paul.h replied to skulcolectorsjg's topic in Problems and Fixes - C5
According to Haynes, you have to remove the door card first, then the handle assembly lifts off upwards and the operating rods can be removed. -
Welcome to the forum. Only a guess, but it is as though the driver's door lock actuator is sticking. If so, possibly using the key in the lock a few times may free it, if not then the door card will have to be removed to access the lock. Depending on the cost, whilst everything is in bits if there are no obvious faults such as a loose/dirty electrical connector, then a new one may be the best option - otherwise you could try moving it and using something such as wd40 to lubricate it.

Problem - Seatbelt Audible Reminder Stopped Working
paul.h replied to burnhole's topic in Technical Section - C8
Welcome to the forum. What car, year, model, engine is the problem on ? When these stopped working, had anything recently been done to the car ? -
Some C5s have auto lights so they come on when it gets a bit dark. If you have this, you can see the sensor on the windscreen at the back of the mirror and you will also have auto intermittent wipers. A comms 2000 unit looks like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-C5-INDICATOR-AND-WIPER-STALKS-WITH-AIRBAG-CASETTE-96592426-XT/251342616401?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D17235%26meid%3D1657966728576084444%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D8045%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D200953068200%26

Tailgate glass, works on mine but only used it once to see if it worked whilst still under warranty (and possibly when I replaced the high level brake light). When you try the rear wash can you hear the pump running, if not it may be a problem with the wiper switch/comms 2000 unit and probably best cost wise to live with it, although in the wet the rear screen quickly gets filthy. The driver's side window switch may have dirty contacts which it may be possible to clean, or replace the switch or possibly a wiring problem where the wires go from the door to the body. An oil/filter change (when due) may help the start up tappet noise.

Welcome to the forum. The MOT lighting problem could be something such as an earth wire fault (wire broken/rusty body connection) from the offside rear lamp or a bad bulb connection (corrosion in the bulb holder or on a bulb) or a dirty electrical connector to the lamp. I once had something similar on a car where a rear bulb dimmed as the indicators worked and I missed it before the MOT since I had not checked all the lights on together. Similarly, the new problem could be an earth problem - check all the earth connections under the bonnet and if possible inside the cab. I am not familiar with the Relay but on our C5 there are earth connections at the sides of the front footwells. Are you sure all 3 stopped at the same time since in my case the horn is used only at MOT time, the reversing lights only noticed at night and the heater fan used quite a lot. If so, was there any preceding event or work being done on the van ? The clicking could be a relay - when does this sound, whilst trying the horn/reversing/trying the heater fan ?

The oil I used was to follow the spec in the car maintenance book and since it is a 2 year or 20k mile service interval I preferred a full synthetic. The 5w30 viscosity was that previously used by the dealer so I stuck with it for the better fuel economy. In the maintenance book for our 2007 C5, it gives an A3 spec for the oil so maybe there has been a change. The sump plug washer is this one and also shows the Citroen part no. 016488 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sump-plug-washer-for-multiple-Peugeot-and-Citroen-models-16488-/140865757427 The ebay price though is more than at my Citroen dealer and did not have a postage cost on top. Only the diesel C3 engines use a different part no. 031340 You can check your own part nos if you register on the service.citroen website, as another professional, member of the Citroen Owners Club.

Welcome to the forum. A few questions that may help somebody provide an answer: Do the doors lock using the key or using the dash button, do they lock using the remote at a different location, do the doors try to lock and then unlock as if not all the doors are closed, is there a source of radio interference nearby such as an amateur radio aerial, phone mast, mobile phone always switched on, does the spare key work, is the car battery fully charged at 12.5 to 12.7 volts, are there any other problems with the car ? Maybe the remotes need synchronising with the car (in the car handbook after replacing a battery and as below), possibly there is a problem with the comms 2000 unit (the big part below the steering wheel containing the light and wiper stalks) which has the remote receiver. 4. Synchronisation of HF PLIP remote controlsN.B. : When replacing the batteries of an HF PLIP remote control, it is necessary to resynchronise the remote control.Perform the following operations :Put the HF key to be synchronised in position "ignition +"Within the next 10 seconds, press one of the HF key buttonsRelease the HF key buttonThe ignition key HF PLIP is synchronised.N.B. : Perform these operations for the other keys equipped with HF remote control.Carry out a locking / unlocking test of the vehicle’s doors and tailgate.N.B. : If the locking / unlocking test of the doors and tailgate is not correct, restart the synchronisations of all the ignition keys equipped with HF PLIPS.

Yes, the Citroen one is a metal washer with a rubber insert. It may survive a second use but if not thats about £25 of good oil wasted, and possibly the previous owner may have done the same. The cheapest place for one is a dealer at about £1. For oil, I have used Castrol Magnatec 5w30 A1, about £25 to £30 from supermarkets and other places for 4 litres.
