  1. Welcome to the forum. I am not familiar with the Xsara so can only suggest things to look at. Does the car have a towbar, just trying to think what could be causing a buzzing noise from the rear and if so it could be a relay for the towbar lighting. If there is a towbar you could remove its fuses to see if this makes a difference. Low battery voltage can give odd electrical problems on Citroens. You could check the battery connections are tight and clean and its connection to earth is good. Then check its voltage, before starting the engine it should be about 12.5 volts and when running about 14.4 volts. You could check the wiring between the rear body and the tailgate to see if there is any damage which could be causing a bare wire to touch the body and buzzing and draining the battery.
  2. Welcome to the forum. I do not know the year, engine, gearbox of your Relay, but is this one any good http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-RELAY-PEUGEOT-BOXER-CLUTCH-CABLE-32304-/380311487987
  3. Fuel filter renewal is covered in the Haynes manual and seems easy enough and if there are more than 2 pipes fastened to it you could take a photo first in case it is not obvious where they connect. The drained diesel should go to the local recycling centre, possibly along with waste engine oil. According to the Haynes manual: First step is to see if the drain pipe is connected underneath, then put a cup or something under and open the drain. If the 8 valve engine then a brake servo hose needs unfastening from the filter top. Clean the pipe connectors and push down their coloured tabs so the pipes can be pulled off, then plug their open ends using the plugs that come with the new filter so dirt can not enter them. The filter is held in place by a single screw, remove this, move the filter and disconnect any electrical connectors as it is removed. If there are a fuel heater and water detector on the filter remove these and fit to the new filter using new O-rings. Fit the new filter and if there is a hand priming pump, use this to fill the filter then start the engine and check for leaks. If the 16 valve engine, to get to the filter some air ducting needs removing and the air filter housing may need moving slightly so the filter can be removed. On the 16 valve engine the priming pump is under the engine cover.
  4. Welcome to the forum. If the switch on the door is not working then possibilities can include a wiring problem such as between the door and body or the electrical connector to the switch is corroded or the switch internals are not making a good contact. You may need to remove the door inside trim to get to the switch to have a look and a quick try would be to connect a wire across its electrical connector- if this works then the switch needs replacing or cleaning internally, if not then it may be a wiring problem. If the switch and wiring are ok and there is a 12 volt supply to the switch and the earth wire from the switch is making a good earth, then the lock motor may be at fault.
  5. From the Common Problems topic: - If the car has self levelling headlights the load sensor can fail and the lights point down. Arak81 has also reported problems with the headlight aim http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/23208-headlight-dipped-focus-adjustment-c4-16hdi/ The switches on the driver's door can fail so it is possible there is a problem with the mirror switch or possibly the wiring such as between the door and body. Does the heated rear window work since this may be switched on at the same time as the mirrors. It is also possible the mirrors are not heated ones and to check may need a mirror glass removing. A sales brochure from 2005 says the heated mirrors are on exclusive and VTS models but not on LX/VT/VTR+/SX/VTR models. The red wire looks as if the previous owner has put it in since the connection on it does not look like a Citroen one.
  6. Welcome to the forum. First time I had to fill up our latest C4 it took me ages to fill it up due to not knowing about the internal flap that needs pushing back by the filling nozzle. You might try using a wire rod to push the flap back and keep this in place whilst trying to use the jerry can.
  7. It could be the no. plate bulb holders are a bit corroded and need scraping with a file where the bulb contacts the holder. If you have a volt meter you could check for 12 volts across the holder contacts. If you do not have 12 volts then possibly the electrical connectors to the bulb holders need cleaning up, but it there is not 12 volts at the connectors then maybe there is a break in the wiring between the body and tailgate. The Haynes manual wiring diagram shows both no. plate lights share the same electrical supply and earth point from the bsi fuse box but they also share the same fuse as the tail lights, so if the tail lights are working then the fuses are ok. You might also check the rear wiper and heated rear window are working in case there is a wiring break since the wires to these share the same route in to the tail gate.
  8. On our Citroens the clock is set using the radio menu but if you have the navi drive this is done from the Configuration menu - rotate the dial to Configuration, press the dial to enter it, select Display configuration and so on to get to the time setting, then rotate the dial on to the hour, press the dial to select it, rotate the dial to the correct hour and then press the dial again, then select OK and press the dial and it should now be set. If you have the Navi drive handbook this is on page 52.
  9. There is a 2004 to 2010 C4 buying guide in the August 2015 Car Mechanics magazine and I have now included a list of things to check from the article in the Common Problems topic.
  10. If they have the clear plastic lenses on them, use a screwdriver (protected with a bit of cardboard to avoid damaging any paintwork) in the middle of the lens at the top side (does not work on the bottom side) to lever the lens off. The lens is held by lugs on the base. Clean the lens before refitting since they get dirty inside.
  11. In case you have not seen it, there is a pinned disclaimer to read on the general discussion section. If you do offer any help I would make sure it is not an official reply from your company to avoid any possible liability issues. If you look on the forum there has only ever been one post from somebody representing Citroen UK and that was in reference to the air suspension failures on the C4 Picasso which had been on the BBC Watchdog programme. They were advising people to go to their Citroen dealer for advice. I have found that it is not always possible to give accurate advice to fix a problem since you do not have access to the vehicle to be able to check it and the facts/symptoms presented may not be sufficient to diagnose a fault. Hence any replies have to be possibly/maybe type of answers.
  12. I guess this will not be the last time Haynes has got something wrong so it is good you have written this topic.
  13. Rather than remove the bumper, Haynes also says the wheel arch liner can be removed instead to get to the pump. This may be easier, the washer covers would not get broken and there is no risk of damaging the bumper paintwork. It is also possible just undoing the front edge of the liner might allow it to be bent down without damage so the pump can be reached.
  14. Welcome to the forum. From the Navidrive handbook with our 2007 C5, under the Traffic Information menu the Trafic information can be filtered geographically and the distance set. I would need to try this on the car to see what the options are but it is giving written alerts not too far away. This is separate to the verbal ones given from radio stations. It book advises in an area of dense traffic to have the filter set at 5 or 10 km, in normal traffic set it at 20 km and for long motorway journeys to set it at 100 km.
  15. Did you have to seal the new motor to stop water getting in ?
  16. On cars when I 've replaced timing chains, they have all been noisy, like dried peas in a tin can. Whether this applies to the 3.0 hdi though I do not know.
  17. Welcome to the forum. How many miles has the car done ? Over the last couple of weeks, has the starter been turning the engine but not at its usual speed ? If the engine management light is not on then there will not be a fault code, so a code reader may not help at all. If the engine is not turning over and the battery is ok, check the battery connections and the earth points and the connections at the starter motor and if there is 12 volts at the starter motor large cable connection and the engine/gearbox earth cable is connected (if unable to see this, check with your meter on resistance for continuity between the car body and the engine). Then at the starter motor, have somebody try to start the car and listen if the starter makes a clicking sound as its solenoid moves - if it does not click then check if there is a 12 volt supply to it when the ignition switch is turned. If it does click then likely the starter motor needs replacing. For now I would ignore the other things you have listed.
  18. Comparing the fuel use by the 1.6 and 2.0 hdi cars, the 2.0 will use about 10% more so at your 15k miles a year, that is approx £150 more a year. The 1.6 needs to be serviced more frequently, pollen filter and oil/filter change 12500 miles vs 20k on the 2.0 hdi or 2 years if sooner on both (if you want to let it go that far between servicing) so this cost may off set all the fuel savings unless you do the work yourself. From a Maintenance and guarantee guide that came with our 2007 C5: - The timing belt is 150k miles on the 1.6 hdi and 160k miles on the 2.0 hdi, or 10 years on both if sooner. - The dpf (if fitted) is fluid top up 75k miles on the 1.6 and 80k miles on the 2.0 and the dpf replacement 112500 miles on the 1.6 and 120000 miles on the 2.0. - The diesel fuel filter and air filter replacement on the 1.6 is 37500 miles and 40000 miles on the 2.0.
  19. All our C4s have had the 110 bhp engine and they have performed well. Being used frequently for long motorway journeys the higher power has been a requirement when buying. You may find the 92 bhp ones are often used by fleets so there will be more of them available and the price should be lower than the 110 bhp ones due to the lower specs. The availability of each engine seems to vary with the model year looking at a 2005 and a 2009 sales brochures. The 2005 has the 92 engine with the LX/VT and SX/VTR models and the 110 engine with the SX/VTR and VTR+ models. The 2009 has the 92 engine with VTR coupe only and the 110 engine with the SX hatchback, the VTR+ hatch and coupe. It is also with the egs gearbox ones.
  20. Welcome to the forum. Any help you can give will be appreciated.
  21. Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the info, which headlight was it ? For the dealer to find it so quickly suggests this could be a common fault so good to know and it may apply to other cars. I will pin the topic so it is not lost amongst the others.
  22. I think this will need to be a Citroen dealer visit. You may need the key code card that should be with the handbook/warranty book. They will then order the correct remote with its immobiliser chip and key blade but when it arrives it will need programming to your car. Expect possibly £150+ for all this. If your nearest dealer is expensive, try one further away since labour rates could be lower.
  23. Signs of a turbo failing can be smoke on accelerating, maybe some noise, play in the rotor but to check this needs some parts removing. We had one fail on a petrol Saab and months before there were signs of smoke on start up and when accelerating but it eventually went on a motorway slip road when a large white cloud surrounded the car. Before it failed we had a breakdown warranty but they would not pay for it replacing until it actually failed at which point it was out of warranty, so if you get a warranty you need to see if it covers wear. This topic from the C5 section is about a 1.6 hdi turbo failure http://www.citroen-owners-club.co.uk/citroen/topic/14888-adviceopinions-needed-for-new-c5-owner-16-hdi-turbo-failure/ . If one does fail it may mean the engine needs replacing if bits of metal get into the engine and oil ways which efectively writes off an older car. If it is just worn and not broken up, then it is possible to replace the turbo but also the oil feed/return pipes need replacing, the sump cleaning out, a filter in the oil feed pipe removing and possibly the ducting/cooler between the turbo and engine cleaning. On the Saab the garage insisted we had to replace the catalyst and lambda sensor since they were affected by the oil that went through the engine. Another common fail on the C4 is the glovebox handle and replacement parts are available through ebay. The driver's seat foam may also break up at the sides.
  24. Your car is the C3 (A51). The C3 was from 2002 to about 2007 when there was a minor facelift to give the C3 II to 2009 but the A51 model is the completely new one from 2009.
  25. Arm rests appear to be fitted to some C4s from RPO 11505 with leather but the sliding top on the cupboard between the front seats is meant to be an arm rest. If your car does not have this cupboard, then it appears to come fastened to a different tunnel so both would be needed.
